Weekly Devotion & Prayer- September 26, 2022

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)

This past week, I was driving to Middleton, Wisconsin for a three-day cabinet retreat/training through very thick fog. As I drove, I focused on the taillights in front of me and the lines on the road. There were moments when I felt like my vehicle was totally engulfed in the white mist.

After a whole hour and half driving, the sun began to shine and believe me, it was one of the most glorious sites I have seen. Not only was I very glad that the sun began to dissipate the fog, but it was truly one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen. The sun was a bright red that as it hit the fog, the fog became a glowing pink haze. I was in awe of this sacred, gorgeous image that I was blessed with on my drive.

This holy early morning encounter provided deeper reflection upon the “foggy” times in my life and how God has been a shiny light to my path. My God lights have been through:

  • God’s Word in Scripture and interpreted in hymns
  • the “taillights” of spiritual leaders
  • prayer and devotional time
  • encouraging notes, emails, and texts
  • quiet time – listening and be attentive to God
  • worship
  • communion

As I write this, I cannot help but sing the hymn written by Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith, “Thy Word.” I offer these words as a prayer for you:

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

When I feel afraid and think I've lost my way
Still you're there right beside me
And nothing will I fear
As long as you are near
Please be near me to the end

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path

I will not forget
Your love for me and yet
My heart forever is wandering
Jesus be my guide
And hold me to your side
I will love you to the end
Nothing will I fear as long as you are near
Please be near me to the end

Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path
And a light unto my path
You're the light unto my path

Amen.
