God is Love,
But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.
(Romans 5: 8, NRSV)
Every February across the world, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. There are several stories that tell of the origins of Saint Valentine’s Day. One such story involves a law created by Roman Emperor, Claudius the Second, who decreed that young men not marry, as a married man was a poor soldier. Saint Valentine was supposed to have secretly married the young soldiers, binding them to the one they loved. Saint Valentine was executed for breaking this law yet healed a blind girl just prior to his own death. It was the first gift of Saint Valentine. The night before his execution, Valentine wrote a farewell message to the girl and signed it “From Your Valentine,” a phrase that we use today. He was executed on February 14, 273 AD. On the register of Christian martyrs, it says: “At Rome, on the Flaminian Way, the heavenly birthday of the blessed martyr Valentine, a priest. After performing many miraculous cures and giving much wise counsel, he was beaten and beheaded under Claudius Caesar.”
As I reflect on this story, I come to value more and more those who put love in action by helping others in different ways, especially during these difficult times of the Pandemic caused by Covid-19. To love is what God is inviting us to do, because God loves us so much that he gave his only son for us, to give us eternal life. The Bible says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
I believe that love is the fruit of knowing God. The apostle John in his first letter expresses it well when he says: “Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.” 1 John 4:7-9
When we give our hearts to Jesus, we enter into a new relationship with him. Jesus said to his disciples, and now is saying to us who follow him: “No one has a greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends...” John 15:13-15b
As you send Valentine cards and other forms of love and affection, remember that God loves you and that Jesus is our best friend! What a privilege!
Prayer: Gracious and Loving God, in this day we give you thanks for your abundant love. Your love has sustained us during these difficult times in the Pandemic. We thank you for our family and friends that reflect your love in different ways especially to those in need. In the name of your Son Jesus the Christ we pray, Amen.

Dios es Amor, ” Pero Dios muestra su amor para con nosotros, en que siendo aún pecadores, Cristo murió por nosotros.” (Romanos 5: 8, Reina Valera 1995)
Durante el mes de Febrero, alrededor del mundo, dulces, flores, y muchos regalos son intercambiados entre personas que se aman, y todo en el nombre de San Valentín. Hay varias historias acerca de los orígenes del día de San Valentín. Una de estas historias envuelve una ley creada por el emperador Romano Claudio Segundo, quien decreto que los jóvenes no se podían casar, porque un hombre casado era un pobre soldado débil. San Valentín supuestamente oficiaba casamientos secretos de jóvenes soldados, uniéndolos con la persona que amaban. San Valentini fue ejecutado por violar la ley, pero, aun así, antes de morir, sano a una joven que estaba ciega. Este fue el primer regalo de San Valentín. La noche antes de su ejecución, San Valentín escribió un mensaje de despedida a la jovencita y firmo: “De tu Valentín” frase que se usa hasta el día de hoy. El fue ejecutado el 14 de Febrero del año 273 después de Cristo. En los registros de los mártires cristianos dice: “En Roma, en la carretera flaminga, el cumpleaños del bendecido mártir San Valentín, sacerdote. Después de haber hecho muchos milagros de sanidad y dar sabios consejos, fue golpeado y decapitado bajo Claudio Cesar.”
Al reflexionar en esta historia, vengo a valorar más y más, aquellos que ponen el amor en acción, ayudando a otros de maneras diferentes, especialmente durante los tiempos difíciles de la Pandemia causada por el COVID-19. Es a amar que Dios nos invita, porque Dios nos ama mucho, de tal manera que el dio a su hijo único por nosotros para que nos diera vida eterna. La Biblia dice: “Porque de tal manera amo Dios al mundo, que dio a su hijo único para que todo aquel que en el crea no se pierda, más tenga vida eterna.” (Juan 3:16)
Yo creo que el amor es el fruto de conocer a Dios. El apóstol Juan lo expresa en su carta muy bien diciendo: “ Amados, amémonos unos a otros; porque el amor es de Dios. Todo aquel que ama, es nacido de Dios, y conoce a Dios. 8 El que no ama, no ha conocido a Dios; porque Dios es amor. 9 En esto se mostró el amor de Dios para con nosotros, en que Dios envió a su Hijo unigénito al mundo, para que vivamos por él.” (1 Juan 4:7-9, Reina Valera 1995)
Cuando le entregamos nuestro corazón a Jesus, entramos en una nueva relación con él. Jesus le dijo a sus discípulos, y ahora nos dice a nosotros: “Nadie tiene mayor amor que éste, que uno ponga su vida por sus amigos. 14 Vosotros sois mis amigos si hacéis lo que yo os mando. 15 Ya no os llamaré siervos, porque el siervo no sabe lo que hace su señor; pero os he llamado amigos, porque todas las cosas que oí de mi Padre os las he dado a conocer.” (San Juan 15: 13-15, Reina Valera 1995)
A media que ustedes manden sus tarjetitas de San Valentín y otras formas de cariño, recuerden que Dios los ama y que Jesus es nuestro mejor amigo! ¡Que privilegio más grande!
Oración: Dios de gracia y amor, en este día te damos gracias por tu abundante amor. Tu amor nos ha sostenido durante estos tiempos difíciles en la pandemia. Te damos gracias por nuestra familia y amigos que reflejan tu amor de muchas maneras, especialmente con aquellos que están en necesidad. En el nombre de tu hijo Jesucristo oramos. Amen.
