Come, Jesus Come
In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord. (Luke 1: 39-45, NRSV)
As I reflect on this passage in the Gospel of Luke, I ask myself, was Elizabeth astonished at the words that she uttered? Where did these words come from? Clearly, Elizabeth had received this revelation from God. She knew that the child that Mary was carrying was a very special child. She realized that this child would be her Lord.
This leads me to ask myself a second question, do we take Jesus’ coming into the world for granted? Or are we amazed, astounded, and filled with joy that our Lord Jesus came to earth as a small, fragile, baby boy?
Jesus was born to peasants, not royalty and wealth. He wanted to become “one of us", God with us (Immanuel). He wanted to walk among us. Today Jesus will come to us even in this time of the pandemic with signs of hope. Most likely, he will come to us when we least expect him. He may come disguised as a friend or he may come to us in the helping hand of a stranger. Perhaps Jesus simply will come in quiet and peace. Be awake throughout this time. You may encounter Jesus several times and others may meet Jesus through you as well.
Prayer: Come, Jesus come, come a bring new hope to us in the midst of a time in which the pandemic has changed even the way we gather for worshiping your holy name. Help us to be awake so we can experience your presence in our daily relationships and all we do. In the name of your Son Jesus the Christ we pray, Amen.
Ven Jesus, Ven
“39 En aquellos días, levantándose María, fue de prisa a la montaña, a una ciudad de Judá; 40 entró en casa de Zacarías y saludó a Elisabet. 41 Y aconteció que cuando oyó Elisabet la salutación de María, la criatura saltó en su vientre, y Elisabet, llena del Espíritu Santo, 42 exclamó a gran voz:—Bendita tú entre las mujeres y bendito el fruto de tu vientre. 43 ¿Por qué se me concede esto a mí, que la madre de mi Señor venga a mí?, 44 porque tan pronto como llegó la voz de tu salutación a mis oídos, la criatura saltó de alegría en mi vientre. 45 Bienaventurada la que creyó, porque se cumplirá lo que le fue dicho de parte del Señor.” (Lucas 1: 39-45, Versión Reina Valera 1995)
Cuando reflexiono en este pasaje del Evangelio según San Lucas, me pregunto a mí mismo, si Elizabeth ¿estaba asombrada por las palabras que habían salido de su boca? ¿de donde salieron estas palabras? Claramente, Elizabeth había recibido esta revelación de parte de Dos. Ella sabía que el niño que Maria llevaba dentro de su vientre era un niño muy especial. Ella se dio cuenta que ese niño era su Señor.
Esto me guio a preguntarme a mi mismo la segunda pregunta, ¿Tomamos nosotros por aludido el que Jesus haya venido a nacer en este mundo? O ¿Estamos maravillados y sorprendidos, y llenos de gozo porque nuestro Señor Jesus vino a nacer en esta tierra como un niño pequeño y frágil?
Jesus vino a nacer entre campesinos, no dentro de la realeza o dentro de los ricos. El quiso ser como “uno de nosotros,” Dios con nosotros (Emanuel). Caminar con nosotros. Hoy Jesus se allega a nosotros aun en tiempo de pandemia con mucha esperanza. Mas aun, el llegara a nosotros aun de maneras que no nos esperábamos. Él, podría llegar a nosotros como encubierto, a lo mejor como un amigo, o a lo mejor llegara como una mano de ayuda en algún extraño. Quizá, Jesus llegue simplemente en lo tranquilo y callado. Estén despiertos durante este tiempo, podrían encontrar a Jesus varias veces, y a lo mejor, otros podrían encontrar a Jesus en cada uno de ustedes igualmente.
Oración: Ven Jesus, ven. Ven y tráenos una nueva esperanza en este tiempo de pandemia que ha afectado aun la manera en que nos reunimos para adorar tu Santo nombre. Ayúdanos a estar despiertos para que podamos experimentar tu presencia en nuestras relaciones diarias y todo lo que hacemos. En el nombre de tu hijo Jesucristo oramos. Amen.
