Rejoice in the Lord
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (Philippians 4: 4-6) New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
As I was reading the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians, I stumbled in these verses. I stopped reading, looked out the window, and said to myself, “That’s ridiculous.” My intention was not to offend St. Paul, but rather I was struck with the incredibly high degree of difficulty this passage proclaims. Rejoice always? I said, how can this be? Since in the eyes of the world and often in my own life, I find this to be an unattainable reality. St. Paul, however, believed that this is possible in such a way that he felt compelled to repeat himself: Rejoice!
I immediately look at my life and the state of our country and world and think of all the reasons not to have joy. All the implications of the pandemic caused by the COVID-19, natural disasters, people losing their jobs, political unrest, and many other things all represent reasons we can justify living without joy. This would be a reasonable concern until we read his second letter to the Corinthians. In chapter 11:23-28, St. Paul lists his difficulties and sufferings while being a disciple of Christ. Here are some highlights: eight separate beating sessions, three shipwrecks, in danger everywhere he went, imprisonments, and the constant pressure of feeling spiritually responsible for all of the new churches. The greatest evangelist suffered an incredible amount and yet he teaches us to always rejoice, praise the Lord!
Prayer: Gracious and loving God, during these difficult times, help us to rejoice in you! to find ways to celebrate your presence as we relate to each other. Give us the strength we need to not worry about anything, but to lift up in prayer our supplications to you with thanksgiving in our hearts. In Jesus Christ, our Lord we pray, Amen!

Regocijaos en el Señor,
“Regocijaos en el Señor siempre. Otra vez digo: ¡Regocijaos! Vuestra gentileza sea conocida de todos los hombres. El Señor está cerca. Por nada estéis angustiados, sino sean conocidas vuestras peticiones delante de Dios en toda oración y ruego, con acción de gracias. 7 Y la paz de Dios, que sobrepasa todo entendimiento, guardará vuestros corazones y vuestros pensamientos en Cristo Jesús. Leyendo la carta del Apóstol San Pablo a los Filipenses me tropecé es estos versículos. Me detuve de leer, miré hacia la ventana y me dije a mi mismo “Eso es ridículo.” Mi intención no era ofender a San Pablo, sino más bien me llamo la atención el increíble alto grado de dificultad que este pasaje proclama. ¿Regocijaos siempre? ¿Como puede ser esto? ya que en los ojos del mundo y a menudo en mi propia vida, encuentro que esto es una realidad que no se puede alcanzar. Sin embargo, San Pablo creía que era posible, de manera que se sintió obligado a repetirse el mismo: ¡Regocijaos!
Inmediatamente miré a mi vida y al estado en que se encuentra nuestro país y pensé en muchas de las razones que nos impiden tener gozo. Todas las implicaciones de la pandemia causada por el Covid-19, desastres naturales, gente perdiendo sus trabajos, la desestabilidad política, y muchas otras cosas que justifican el vivir sin gozo. Esta podría ser una preocupación razonable hasta que nosotros leemos la segunda carta del Apóstol Pablo a los Corintios en el capitulo 11:23-28, donde San Pablo hace una lista de todas las dificultades y sufrimientos que padeció como discípulo de Jesucristo. Aquí esta una lista que podemos destacar: Azotado ocho veces en diferentes ocasiones, tres veces padeció naufragios, atravesó por muchos peligros donde quiera que fue, sufrió muchas prisiones, y la presión constante de sentirse el responsable espiritualmente de todas las nuevas iglesias. El evangelista más grande padeció muchos sufrimientos, más sin embargo nos enseña que hay que estar siempre gozosos. Alabado sea el Señor!
Oración: Dios de gracia y amor, durante estos tiempos difíciles ayúdanos a regocijarnos en ti, a encontrar maneras de celebrar tu presencia cuando nos relacionamos unos con otros. Danos la fuerza que necesitamos para que no nos preocupamos por nada, sino que levantemos nuestras suplicas en oración a ti con acción de gracias en nuestros corazones. ¡En Jesucristo nuestro Señor oramos, Amen!
