Stand Up and Be Counted
Now Zelophehad son of Hepher son of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh had no sons, but only daughters; and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. They came before the priest Eleazar and Joshua son of Nun and the leaders, and said, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance along with our male kin.” So according to the commandment of the Lord he gave them an inheritance among the kinsmen of their father. Thus there fell to Manasseh ten portions, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is on the other side of the Jordan, because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance along with his sons. What amazing women these daughters of Zelophehad must have been to stand up and demand their right to be counted along with the male heirs of Manasseh! They got what they asked for—their own portion of the promise land.
I came across this passage in my daily reading of the scriptures and it got my attention, I could not help to think immediately in this year the Census opportunity to be counted as a person living in this country. While the information gathered from the Census plays an important role in determining how many seats each state will have in the House of Representatives, it also determines community funding that provide benefits for the elderly, helps build new roads, helps build new schools, contributes to neighborhood improvements, and assists in public health efforts. It is a right and everyone needs to be counted.
Can you think of an occasion when you were overlooked because of your gender or age or race or some other aspect of your identity? Did you have the courage to stand up and insist on being counted? How has God encouraged you to do so? In what ways do you need to remind others that you, too, are one of God’s people?
Prayer: Gracious and loving God, during these difficult times in which many people feel they are excluded and not counted in many aspects of our society, help us to be your disciples and have the courage to stand up and be agents of change. May your kingdom come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus Christ, our Lord we pray, Amen!

May this devotion provide you with a moment of faithful reflection and care. ¡Levántate y se Contado!
“Pero Zelofehad hijo de Hefer hijo de Galaad, hijo de Maquir, hijo de Manasés, no tuvo hijos sino hijas, los nombres de las cuales son estos: Maala, Noa, Hogla, Milca y Tirsa. Éstas acudieron ante el sacerdote Eleazar, ante Josué hijo de Nun y ante los príncipes, y dijeron: «Jehová mandó a Moisés que nos diera una heredad entre nuestros hermanos.» Y se les dio una heredad entre los hermanos de su padre, conforme al dicho de Jehová. Le tocaron a Manasés diez partes, además de la tierra de Galaad y de Basán, que está al otro lado del Jordán, pues las hijas de Manasés recibieron una heredad entre sus hijos. ¡Que maravillosas mujeres han de haber sido estas hijas de Zelofehad para levantarse y demandar el derecho de ser contadas al igual que los varones herederos de Manasés! Ellas consiguieron lo que pedían—su propia porción de la tierra prometida.
En mi lectura diaria de las escrituras me encontré con este pasaje que me llamo mucho la atención, y no pude evitar más que pensar inmediatamente en el Censo de este año y en la oportunidad de ser contados como habitantes viviendo en este país. Mientras la información que se colecta en el Censo juega un papel importante en determinar cuántos asientos cada estado va a tener en la casa de representantes o congreso, también determina los fondos comunitarios que van a proveer beneficios para las personas ancianas, para construir nuevas carreteras, nuevas escuelas, contribuir a mejorar los vecindarios, y asistir en los esfuerzos de mejorar la salud pública. Este es un derecho y todos necesitamos ser contados.
¿Pueden ustedes pensar en alguna situación en la cual fueron ignorados por su género, edad o raza, o cualquier otro aspecto de su identidad? ¿Tuvieron ustedes el coraje de levantarse e insistir en ser contados? ¿Cómo te ha alentado y fortalecido Dios a hacer esto? ¿De qué manera necesita usted recordarle a los demás que usted también es parte del pueblo de Dios?
Oración: Dios de gracia y amor, en estos tiempos difíciles en los cuales muchas personas se sienten excluidas y no tomadas en cuenta en nuestra sociedad, ayúdanos a ser tus discípulos y a tener el valor de levantarnos y ser agentes de cambio. Que tu reino venga y se haga tu voluntad aquí en la tierra como en el cielo. ¡En Jesucristo nuestro Señor oramos, Amen!
