Love in Action
I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayer. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints. Central America was hit by Eta as a Category 4 hurricane, which weakened to a tropical depression. The death toll in Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Honduras, as a result of flooding and mudslides caused by torrential rains from Hurricane Eta, passed 300, plus more than 250,000 people were displaced. When we add to the COVID-19 pandemic these kinds of natural disasters like Eta, people have reasons to be discouraged and without hope, but this is not what I experienced in my recent vacation trip to El Salvador last week. It was hopeful to see how the government of El Salvador and churches gathered resources and sent trucks with food and volunteers to help to alleviate the situation of their neighboring countries.
This act of mercy and support reminds me of the witness and love of the brothers and sisters in the church in Ephesus. Paul writes to them with words of encouragement, giving thanks to God for their faith in Jesus Christ and their love toward all the saints. Paul is thanking them not for warm feelings toward others, but love in action. This "faith" and "love" will be fleshed out later in the letter in terms of the pursuit of unity, breaking through those lines that inhibit reconciliation and unity in the world. The community in Christ should never have within it evidence of the disunity that plagues the surrounding world. Where this is the case, how can the transformative life of love rooted in active faith be heard?
Prayer: Gracious and loving God, thank you so much for the gift of love toward one another, especially when others are suffering and are discouraged by the adversities in life. Guide us to help those in need so we can experience your power through love in action. In Jesus Christ, our Lord we pray, Amen!

Amor en Acción,

Centro América fue devastada por el huracán Eta de categoría 4, el cual se debilito a una depresión tropical. El numero de muertes en Guatemala, Nicaragua, y Honduras sobrepaso a los 300, y mas de 250,000 personas fueron desplazadas. Cuando nosotros añadimos a la Pandemia del COVID-19 estos tipos de desastres naturales, la gente tiene suficientes razones para sentirse desalentadas y sin esperanza, pero eso no es lo que yo pude experimentar en mi reciente viaje a El Salvador la semana pasada. Fue muy alentador el ver como el gobierno de El Salvador y las Iglesias unieron sus fuerzas recogiendo recursos y enviaron camiones de alimentos y muchos voluntarios para ayudar a aliviar la situación de sus países vecinos.
Este acto de misericordia y apoyo me recuerda del testimonio y amor de los hermanos y hermanas de la Iglesia de Efesios. Pablo les escribe con palabras de aliento, dando gracias a Dios por su fe en Jesucristo y su amor hacia todos los santos. Pablo les está dando gracias no por su caluroso sentimiento hacia otros sino por poner su amor en acción. Esta “fe” y “amor” estarán tomando forma mas adelante en la carta en términos de una búsqueda hacia la unidad, rompiendo a través de aquellas líneas que previenen la reconciliación y la unidad en el mundo. La comunidad en Cristo nunca debería tener evidencias de una desunión que plague el mundo al derredor. Donde sea este el caso, ¿cómo puede la vida transformadora del amor enraizada en una fe activa ser oída?
Oración: Dios de gracia y amor, muchísimas gracias por el regalo del amor hacia los demás. Especialmente cuando otros están sufriendo y están desalentados por las adversidades de la vida. Guíanos a ayudar a aquellos en necesidad de manera que podamos experimentar tu poder a través del amor en acción. ¡En Jesucristo nuestro Señor oramos, Amen!
