How Long, O Lord?
“How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I bear pain in my soul,
and have sorrow in my heart all day long?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
Consider and answer me, O Lord my God!
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death,
and my enemy will say, “I have prevailed”;
my foes will rejoice because I am shaken.
But I trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your salvation
I will sing to the LORD because he has dealt bountifully with me.”

How long, O Lord? it seems that every one of us as children of God have asked this question at one time or another in our life, and that every follower of God has felt neglected by God, or at least has waited a long time for God to do what needs to be done.
I believe this is the case for many people around the world affected not only by the pandemic of COVID-19, but also by the recent earthquakes, storms, and flooding. People may ask as the Psalmist of Psalm 13 attributed to David:
“Will you forget me forever?” “How long will you hide your face from me?”
The pain in David’s heart came from a sense that God had forgotten him and that God was distancing Himself from him. No doubt, David had faced worse circumstances, but had faced them more bravely when he had sensed the presence of God with him. Yet now, feeling distant from God, it did not take much to send David into despair.
In the same way we may feel distant from God in these difficult times. We don’t know when the COVID-19 will end or when we’ll be back to worship in our church buildings, and live normal lives as we are used to, but as people of faith in Jesus Christ we can have the hope that God is in the midst with us in these difficult times. We can join the Psalmist saying:
“But I trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.”
Prayer:
Gracious and loving God, forgive us when we fall into despair and frustration when we are going through difficult times. Give us the patience to wait on you and know that it is in your time, not in our time, that things fall into place. May we trust in your steadfast love and rejoice in your salvation.

Hasta Cuando, O Dios?
“¿Hasta cuándo, Jehová? ¿Me olvidarás para siempre?
¿Hasta cuándo esconderás de mí tu rostro?
¿Hasta cuándo tendré conflictos en mi alma,
con angustias en mi corazón cada día?
¿Hasta cuándo será enaltecido mi enemigo sobre mí?
Mira, respóndeme, Jehová, Dios mío; alumbra mis ojos,
para que no duerma de muerte, para que no diga mi enemigo: «Lo vencí.»
Mis enemigos se alegrarán si yo resbalo.
Mas yo en tu misericordia he confiado; mi corazón se alegrará en tu salvación.

¿Hasta cuándo, O Dios? Parece ser que cada uno de nosotros como hijos e hijas de Dios nos hemos hecho esta pregunta en algún tiempo u otro de nuestra vida. Y como todo seguidor de Dios ha sentido la negligencia de Dios en algún momento, o por lo menos ha esperado largo tiempo por Dios para que haga lo que se tiene que hacer.
Yo creo que esta es la situación de mucha gente alrededor del mundo afectada no solamente por la pandemia del COVID-19, sino también por los recientes terremotos, tormentas e inundaciones. La gente podría preguntarse como el Salmista del Salmo 13 atribuido a David:
¿Hasta cuándo esconderás de mí tu rostro? ¿Hasta cuándo tendré conflictos en mi alma, con angustias en mi corazón cada día?
El dolor del corazón de David viene de un sentimiento que Dios lo ha abandonado y que Dios se ha alejado del él. No hay duda de que David había enfrentado circunstancias más difíciles, pero las había enfrentado valientemente cuando él podía sentir que Dios estaba presente con él. Mas aun ahora, ese sentimiento de que Dios se había alejado de él, no tomo mucho tiempo en enviar a David a la desesperación.
De la misma manera nosotros podemos sentirnos distantes de Dios en estos tiempos difíciles. No sabemos cuándo el COVID-19 va a terminar o cuando volveremos a adorar en los edificios de nuestras las iglesias, y vivir vidas normales como las que estábamos acostumbrados, pero como personas de fe en Jesucristo podemos tener la esperanza de que Dios esta en medio de nosotros en estos tiempos difíciles. Y podemos decir como el Salmista:
“Mas yo en tu misericordia he confiado; mi corazón se alegrará en tu salvación.”
Oración:
Dios de gracia y de misericordia, perdonamos cuando caemos en desesperación y frustración cuando atravesamos por tiempos difíciles. Danos la paciencia de esperar en ti y saber que es en tu tiempo, y no en el nuestro, que todas las cosas caen en su lugar. Permítenos confiar en tu infinito amor y regocijarnos en tu salvación. ¡En Jesucristo nuestro Señor, Amen!
