Your Word is My Lamp
“Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.”
(Psalm 119:105) New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
My hometown Ahuachapán, in my country of origin El Salvador, has a lot of mountains. In these mountains there are many places where people plant coffee trees. When I was a teenager, I used to work in the coffee plantations for the harvest during the months of November, December and part of January to make some money to buy my clothes and books for the school year.
Part of the adventure of this work was to wake up very early in the morning, usually at 4:00 a.m., and start to walk up to the mountains. Some days it was very dark, and we needed to carry a lamp to be able to see our path where we were going. As I grew up, this experience in my life helped me to understand that, in the same way, the Bible is the lamp that helps me to see clear the path in my life, especially in difficult times where everything seems dark.
What a powerful affirmation when the Psalmist says: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” There are indeed moments in our journey of life that our path seems so dark that we do not see a way out. I am sure many people these days feel that way with everything that is going on in our nation: COVID-19 cases increasing, people losing their jobs, others in our communities experiencing racism and discrimination. The Word of God is our light that illuminates our path, so we do not stumble as we walk through this difficult time.
Prayer:
Gracious and loving God, in these difficult times we are living, may your Word illuminate our path that we can see and feel that every step on the way you are guiding us with your love and care.

Tu Palabra es mi Lampara
“Lámpara es a mis pies tu Palabra y Lumbrera a mi camino”

En mi pueblo Ahuachapán, en mi país de origen El Salvador hay muchas montañas. En estas montañas hay muchos lugares donde la gente han plantado árboles de café. Cuando yo era un jovencito iba a trabajar a las plantaciones de café durante la época de la cosecha en los meses de noviembre, diciembre, y parte de enero y así poder ganar dinero para comprar mi ropa y mis libros para ir a la escuela.
Parte de la aventura de este trabajo era que tenia que levantarme muy temprano, usualmente a las 4:00 de la mañana, y comenzar a caminar hacia arriba de la montaña. Algunos días estaba tan oscuro que necesitábamos llevar una lampara para alumbrar nuestro camino y así saber por dónde íbamos. A media que crecía, esta experiencia de mi vida me ayudo a entender que de la misma manera, la Biblia que es la palabra de Dios, es la Lámpara que me ayuda a ver mi camino de una manera mas clara, especialmente en aquellos momentos difíciles de mi vida donde todo parece oscuro.
Que afirmación más poderosa cuando el Salmista dice: “Lámpara es a mis pies tu Palabra y Lumbrera a mi camino.” En efecto, hay momentos en la jornada de nuestra vida que nuestro camino parece tan oscuro de manera que no podemos ver la salida. Yo estoy seguro que muchas personas se sienten así en estos días con todo lo que esta sucediendo en nuestra nación: los casos de Covid-19 aumentando, personas perdiendo sus trabajos, y otros en nuestras comunidades experimentando racismo y discriminación. La Palabra de Dios es la luz que ilumina nuestro camino, de manera que no tropecemos cuando caminamos a través de estos tiempos difíciles.
Oración:
Dios de gracia y de misericordia, en estos tiempos difíciles que estamos viviendo, que tu Palabra ilumine nuestro caminar de manera que posamos ver y sentir que cada paso que damos tu nos estás guiando con tu amor y cuidado. ¡En Jesucristo nuestro Señor, Amen!
