God's Blessings of Strength and Peace!
Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendor.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare;
and in his temple all say, “Glory!”
The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. May the Lord give strength to his people!

In the region of Central America this time of the year is a rainy season. Sometimes hurricanes, storms and flooding make their way into the land and cause devastation. I remember that when I was growing up as a child, I was scared of thunder and lighting, and my grandma used to say that God was angry because of the bad behavior and sins of people.
In the ancient world the forces of nature were connected in people’s minds to ‘the gods’. In fact, all of the religions that surrounded Israel were nature and fertility religions. In the Canaanite religion, ‘Baal’ (meaning, ‘lord’ or ‘master’) was the weather-god associated with storms, thunder and lightning. He conquers ‘Yam’ the chaotic sea-god called ‘the god of mighty waters.’ The gods of the powerful cedars of Lebanon and the mountains of Sirion (north of Israel) were viewed as powerful.
All of these things are referred to in this psalm attributed to king David. The psalm demonstrates clearly the unique power of the LORD, as the only true God, over all of the forces of nature.
When I grew up and read the Bible, I got to know Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior of the World, and I came to understand that the forces of nature do not have a will of their own, that they operate only under the authority of the living and true God. In the Psalm the Voice of God is mentioned seven times in relationship to his authority over creation.
As people around the world continue living in fear because of the pandemic and other disasters, may we join the hope of David in this psalm when he says:
May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace! (V.11)
Prayer: Gracious and loving God, as people around our world experience fear and devastation caused by natural disasters and sickness, may your voice of comfort and healing be with them. Bless us with the strength and peace that flow from your love for us and your creation. In Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, Amen!

Voz de Jehová sobre las aguas. ¡Truena el Dios de gloria: Jehová sobre las muchas aguas!

En la región de Centro América en este tiempo del año es época de lluvia. Algunas veces los huracanes, tormentas e inundaciones hacen su aparición en estas tierras causando muchas devastaciones. Yo recuerdo que cuando estaba creciendo como niño, me daba mucho temor las tormentas, los truenos y relámpagos, y mi abuelita solía decir que era que Dios estaba enojado por el mal comportamiento y el pecado de la gente.
En el mundo antiguo las fuerzas de la naturaleza estaban conectadas con “los dioses”, según los pensamientos de la gente de la época. De hecho, todas las religiones de los pueblos que rodeaban a Israel, eran religiones basadas en la naturaleza y la fertilidad. En la religión de los Cananitas, ‘Baal” (que significa ‘señor’ o ‘maestro’) era el dios-del clima- asociado con las tormentas, los truenos y los relámpagos. Él había conquistado a ‘Yam’ el dios-caótico del mar llamado el ‘dios de las aguas poderosas’. Los dioses de los poderosos cedros del Líbano y de las montañas de Sirion (al norte de Israel) eran vistos como poderosos.
De todas estas cosas se hace referencia en este Salmo atribuido al Rey David. El Salmo demuestra claramente el poder único de Dios, como el único Dios verdadero sobre todas las fuerzas de la naturaleza.
Cuando ya crecí y pude leer la Biblia, yo conocí a Cristo Jesus como mi Señor y Salvador del mundo entendí que las fuerzas de la naturaleza no tienen su destino y poder por sí solas, sino que operan y trabajan únicamente bajo la autoridad del verdadero Dios vivo. En el Salmo, la Voz de Dios es mencionada siete veces en relación a su autoridad sobre la creación.
A medida que la gente al rededor del mundo vive bajo temor por la pandemia y otros desastres, que nosotros podamos unirnos a la esperanza del Salmista David cuando dice:
”Jehová dará poder a su pueblo; Jehová bendecirá a su pueblo con paz.” (V.11)
Oración: Dios de gracia y de misericordia, a medida que la gente al rededor del mundo experimenta temor y devastación causadas por desastres naturales y enfermedades, que tu Voz de consuelo y sanidad sean con ellos. Bendícenos con tu fortaleza y paz que fluyen de tu amor para nosotros y tu creación.
En Jesucristo nuestro Señor, Amen!
