See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. (1 John 3:1-3)
I love the imagery of being children of God, but I want to go further and think about what it might mean to be grandchildren of God. Im and I are grandparents for the first time with our blessed little gift, Sydney Grace, and she is the delight of our life! What joy, what pride, what wonder! She is a ray of sunshine and we can hardly get enough of her. The real glory of grandparenting is all the joys with very little of the daily responsibility. We can simply love on her and dote on her and celebrate her life.
It is the joy of grandparenting that adds a new dimension to my understanding of what it means to be a child of God. Throughout the Johannine letters, the theme of God’s great love is expressed again and again, and it is the love of a parent (a grandparent?) for their child. God the Father, God the Mother, God the Grandparent, God the Creator sees us as beautiful, wonderful, joyful, miraculous, and filled with almost limitless potential.
Most parents want only the best for their children. They make great sacrifices to make sure their children are provided for. They nurture and teach their children. They guide them and set boundaries for them. They encourage and support them as they learn to make their own choices and move from an almost total dependency to a healthy independence, and beyond to life affirming interdependence as they become parents (and grandparents!) themselves. We are created into a divine plan for vitality and thriving.
God doesn’t just see us as we are, but God sees all the potential and possibility for our lives. As a loving Father, as a nurturing Mother, as a visionary creator, God loves us much more than what we earn or deserve. Just as earthly parents love their children, even when the children are at their most unlovable, give to their children when the children are ungrateful, and accept their children even when children misbehave and act unconscionably, God extends even more patience, grace, and tolerance to all of us.
Look in the mirror. What you see there is a beloved child of God. Look out a window. The people passing by are beloved children of God. Walk through town – beloved children of God. Drive down the street – beloved children of God. In restaurants, shops, businesses, fitness centers, movie theaters, and yes, even churches – beloved children of God. But note, even in slum neighborhoods, ganglands, prisons, mental institutions, closed borders – beloved children of God. And if God’s children exist in every place and space on earth, it means that we have billions of siblings – brothers and sisters, cousins, and in-laws, all related in one glorious family of beloved creation! And Jesus is brother to us all!
Prayer: What a glorious and grand family we have been born into! Thank you, Lord. Help us to extend to each other the love and grace and patience and tolerance we extend to our own family. Expand our vision to see we are all connected, all related, and all beloved. In Jesus’ holy name we pray. Amen.

Me encanta la imagen de ser niños, hijos/as de Dios, pero me gustaría ir más allá y pensar acerca de lo que significa ser nietos de Dios. Im y yo somos abuelos por primera vez con nuestra pequeña bendición, Sydney Grace, y ella es ¡la luz de nuestra vida.! ¡Que gozo más lindo, que orgullo, que maravilloso!! Ella es un rayo de sol, y no podemos tenerla lo suficiente con nosotros. La gloria real de ser abuelos es todo gozo, con la muy poca responsabilidad diaria. Simplemente podemos amar a nuestra nietecita, acariciarla y celebrar su vida.
Es el gozo de ser abuelos lo que añade una nueva dimensión a mi entendimiento de lo que significa ser hijos/as de Dios. A través de todas las cartas Joaninas (Escritas por San Juan) el tema del gran amor de Dios es expresado una y otra vez, y es el amor de un padre (un abuelo/a?) por su hijo/a. Dios el Padre, Dios la Madre, Dios Abuelo/a, El Dios creador, nos mira bellos/as, maravillosos/as, gozosos, milagrosos, y llenos de un potencial ilimitado.
La mayoría de los Padres desean lo mejor para sus hijos. Ellos hacen grandes sacrificios para asegurarse que sus hijos tengan todo lo necesario. Nutren y enseñan a sus hijos/as. Los guían y les ponen límites para ellos. Los animan y los apoyan a medida que ellos van aprendiendo a tener sus propias opciones y moverse de ser casi totalmente dependientes hacia una sana
independencia, y mas allá, a una vida que afirma la independencia al llegar a hacer padres (y abuelos) ellos mismos. Somos creados dentro de un plan divino para vitalidad y prosperidad.
Dios no solamente nos ve tal y como somos, sino que ve en nosotros todo el potencial y posibilidad para nuestras vidas. Como un Padre amoroso, como una Madre que nutre, como un creador visionario, Dios nos ama mucho más de lo que nosotros podemos merecer y ganar. Así como los padres terrenales aman a sus hijos, aun cuando los hijos no merecen ser amados, darle a sus hijos aun cuando ellos son desagradecidos, y aceptar a sus hijos/as aun cuando se portan mal y actúan inconscientemente, Dios aun extiende más paciencia, gracia, tolerancia, hacia todos nosotros.
Miren en el espejo, lo que ves es un hijo/a amado de Dios. Mira a través de la ventana, las personas que están pasando por allí, son hijos/as amados de Dios. Camina por tu vecindario---amados hijos/as de Dios---Maneja por las calles----amados hijos/as de Dios. En restaurantes, comercios, negocios, centros de hacer ejercicios, cines y teatros, y si, aun Iglesias----amados hijos/as de Dios. Pero noten, aun en los barrios marginales, tierra de pandillas, prisiones, instituciones mentales, fronteras cerradas---amados hijos/as de Dios. Y si los hijos/as de Dios existen en todos los lugares y espacios en la tierra, esto significa que nosotros tenemos billones de hermanos---hermanos y hermanas, primos, y cuñados/as, todos emparentados en una gloriosa familia de una amada creación. Y Jesus es ¡hermano para todos.!
Oración: ¡Que gloriosa y gran familia tenemos en la cual hemos nacido.! Gracias Señor. Ayúdanos a extender el uno al otro el amor, gracia, paciencia y tolerancia que nosotros extendemos a nuestra propia familia. Expande nuestra visión para que veamos que todos estamos conectados, todos emparentados, y todos amados. En el nombre de Jesus oramos.
