Pouring Out Love
Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She bought it[c] so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”

It was only six days before the Passover when Jesus came to Bethany. The Lord Himself loved Bethany where Lazarus had been dead, whom He raised from the dead, "There they made Him a supper; and Martha served." The spirit of service was still strong upon her; but Jesus no more rebuked her, for Martha was no longer cumbered with her serving; and Lazarus, the raised one, was "one of them that sat at the table with Him.”
Jesus was with this little family for the last time, and His disciples were now with Him. While the company were yet at meal, the quiet Mary "took a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly," but not too costly for one who appreciated her Savior, "and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment."
Mary had understood what none of the disciples had fully taken in – that Jesus must die for our sins. None but Jesus Himself understood her action. He was the Representative of humanity as the Sin-Bearer, but Mary stood as the offeror of the offering, and, on the part of humanity, she anointed Him for His burial. Mary anoints Jesus in a grand and extravagant gesture of uninhibited love. Though others criticize her, Jesus accepts her gift and affirms her faith and love.
What unexpected and extravagant act of love can you perform today? How can you be a gift to others? What can you do that will be a reflection of the love of Jesus?
Prayer:
God of Mercy, God of love, forgive us we pray. In this Holy Week help us to recognize and see in others your presence, your sufferings, your love. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen!

Seis días antes de la Pascua fue Jesús a Betania, donde estaba Lázaro, el que había estado muerto y a quien había resucitado de los muertos. y le hicieron allí una cena; Marta servía y Lázaro era uno de los que estaban sentados a la mesa con él. Entonces María tomó una libra de perfume de nardo puro, de mucho precio, y ungió los pies de Jesús y los secó con sus cabellos; y la casa se llenó del olor del perfume. Dijo uno de sus discípulos, Judas Iscariote hijo de Simón, el que lo había de entregar: —¿Por qué no se vendió este perfume por trescientos denarios y se les dio a los pobres? Pero dijo esto, no porque se preocupara por los pobres, sino porque era ladrón y, teniendo la bolsa, sustraía de lo que se echaba en ella. Entonces Jesús dijo: —Déjala, para el día de mi sepultura ha guardado esto. A los pobres siempre los tendréis con vosotros, pero a mí no siempre me tendréis. Faltaban únicamente seis días para la celebración de la Pascua cuando Jesús llegó a Betania. El Señor mismo amaba Betania donde Lázaro había estado muerto, y a quien El resucito de los muertos, “allí le habían hecho una cena; y Marta servía;” el espíritu de servicio todavía estaba fuerte en ella; pero Jesus ya no más la reprendía en su servicio; y Lázaro, el que había resucitado, era uno de ellos que estaban sentados a la mesa con Él.”
Jesus estaba con esta pequeña familia por ultima vez, y sus discípulos estaban allí con Él. Mientras la compañía todavía estaba en la comida, la callada Maria “tomó una libra de aceite de perfume de nardo, muy costoso, “pero no tan costoso para alguien que apreciaba a su Salvador,” y ungió los pies de Jesús, y los seco con su cabello; y la casa fue llena con el olor del perfume de aceite.”
Maria había entendido lo que ninguno de los discípulos había comprendido---que Jesus debería morir por nuestros pecados. Ninguno mas que Jesus mismo entendió la acción de esta mujer. El era el Representante de toda la humanidad como el que carga con nuestros pecados. Pero Maria se sostuvo como la que ofrenda en esta ofrenda, y en nombre de toda la humanidad, ella unge a Jesus para su muerte. María unge a Jesús en un gran gesto de extravagancia y un amor desinhibido o libre. A pesar de que los demás la criticaron, Jesús acepta este regalo de parte de ella y afirma su fe y su amor.
¿Qué acto de amor inesperado y extravagante puede usted hacer el día de hoy? ¿Cómo puede ser usted un regalo para los demás? ¿Qué puede usted hacer que sería un reflejo del amor de Jesús?
Oración:
Dios de misericordia y amor, perdónanos te lo pedimos. ayúdanos a reconocer y ver en los demás tu presencia, tus sufrimientos y tu amor. En el nombre de Jesus oramos. ¡Amen!
