Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:5-8)
I would like to share a conflation of four New Testament passages that guide my thinking and spiritual path. They come from Romans 12:2, Philippians 2:5, 1 Corinthians 4:1-2, and 1 John 4:8, and I first combined them almost 35 years ago. They read as follows: “Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you might discern the will of God; what is true and acceptable and perfect. Let the same mind be in you that was in Jesus Christ and think of yourself in this way: as a servant of Christ and a steward of the mysteries of God. Furthermore, it is imperative that stewards be trustworthy, especially of this truth: God is love.”
My daily devotions and reflections generally lead me to think deeply and hard about “the mind of Christ.” How did Jesus think? What did Jesus think? What did Jesus value? What did Jesus believe, and how did it shape his actions? What does it truly mean to “let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus?”
Paul is fairly clear. This mind is one of humility, obedience, service, kindness, gentleness, but also confidence, assurance, and willingness. Jesus came to earth as the living reality of God’s love, forgiveness, healing, and reconciliation. Paul understood Jesus as the great unifier of hearts and minds and the destroyer of division and hostility. Jesus was the ultimate peacemaker – the incarnation of mercy and justice in a fractured and violent world. Jesus was hope. Jesus was light. Jesus was promise. Jesus was grace.
And so what does this make us? If we affirm the blessing of our baptism and faith, we ARE the body of Christ for the world. We are the incarnation for our day and world. All that Jesus was, we are called to be. All that Jesus thought and felt and believed and valued are ours to discern and act upon. Amazing.
This is why we need a strong community of faith. This is why we need each other. This is why we are called to join together as one body. It is simply not possible for any one of us to fully comprehend the mind of Christ. Even together we may never fully embrace “the mind of Christ,” but we are much closer together than on our own. “In Christ there is no east or west, in him no south or north; but one great fellowship of love throughout the whole wide earth. In Christ shall true hearts everywhere their high communion find; his service is the golden cord, close binding humankind.” (UMH #548, verses 1 and 2)
Prayer: God, you call us to be one mind, the mind of Christ. You grant us all we need to see your vision for unity, grace, and love. Grant us also the wisdom we need to receive this blessed gift, that we might empty ourselves of selfish ego and desire and seek in every way to honor and glorify you. Amen.

Filipenses 2:5-8
Me gustaría compartir una combinación de cuatro pasajes del Nuevo Testamento que guían mi pensar y mi camino espiritual. Vienen de Romanos 12: 2, Filipenses 2: 5, 1 Corintios 4: 1-2 y 1 Juan 4: 8, y los combiné por primera vez hace casi 35 años. Mis devociones y reflexiones diarias generalmente me llevan a pensar profunda y profundamente sobre “la mente de Cristo”. ¿Cómo pensó Jesús? ¿Qué pensó Jesús? ¿Qué valoró Jesús? ¿Qué creyó Jesús y cómo moldeó sus acciones? ¿Qué significa realmente "dejar en ti la misma mente que estaba en Cristo Jesús"?
Paul es bastante claro. Esta mente es de humildad, obediencia, servicio, bondad, gentileza, pero también confianza, seguridad y disposición. Jesús vino a la tierra como la realidad viva del amor, el perdón, la curación y la reconciliación de Dios. Pablo entendió a Jesús como el gran unificador de corazones y mentes y el destructor de división y hostilidad. Jesús fue el último pacificador: la encarnación de la misericordia y la justicia en un mundo fracturado y violento. Jesús fue esperanza. Jesús era ligero. Jesús fue una promesa. Jesús fue gracia.
Y entonces, ¿en qué nos convierte esto? Si afirmamos la bendición de nuestro bautismo y fe, SOMOS el cuerpo de Cristo para el mundo. Somos la encarnación de nuestro día y nuestro mundo. Todo lo que Jesús fue, estamos llamados a ser. Todo lo que Jesús pensó, sintió, creyó y valoró es nuestro para discernir y actuar. Eso es muy asombroso.
Por eso necesitamos una comunidad de fe resiliente. Por eso nos necesitamos los unos a los otros. Por eso estamos llamados a unirnos como un solo cuerpo. Simplemente, no es posible que ninguno de nosotros comprenda completamente la mente de Cristo. Incluso juntos puede que nunca abracemos completamente “la mente de Cristo”, pero estamos mucho más cerca que por nuestra cuenta. “En Cristo no hay oriente ni occidente, en él no hay sur ni norte; sino una gran comunión de amor por toda la tierra. En Cristo encontrarán corazones verdaderos en todas partes su alta comunión; su servicio es el cordón de oro que une estrechamente a la humanidad ". (UMH # 548, versículos 1 y 2)
Oración: Dios, nos llamas a ser una sola mente, la mente de Cristo. Concédenos todo lo que necesitamos para ver tu visión de unidad, gracia y amor. Concédenos también la sabiduría que necesitamos para recibir esta bendicion, para que podamos vaciarnos del ego y el deseo de poder y buscar por todos los medios para honrarte y glorificarte. Amén.
