A New Name
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous.” Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. (Genesis 17:1-5) New Revised Standard Version
I always have been fascinated with the meanings of names. I remember as a child asking my father, “Why did you and Mom give me the name Jorge?” “Because you are my son and my name is Jorge,” said my father, “so you are named after me; you are Jorge.” Later as a youth, I found out that the meaning of the name Jorge is “Farmer.” Then when I came to the United States, I felt as if my name was changed as some people found it easier to call me George.
The scripture in Genesis tells us about a person whose name was changed by God for a special purpose, this was Abram. Abram was ninety-nine years old when God changed his name to Abraham as part of the covenant: “No longer shall be your name Abram, but your name shall be Abraham.” Abram means “Exalted Father” and the new name Abraham means “Father of many.” This new name that God gave to Abram carries the blessing of being the ancestor of a multitude of nations. I am amazed now that so many nations claim Abraham as their father. This is a great blessing for Abraham. I believe that every name is important and has a special meaning.
In the ritual of Baptism in the Spanish UMC Hymn Book “Mil Voces Para Celebrar” there is a section in which the pastor says: “Every name is special and important before God. As God changed the names of Abraham, Sara and Jacob, the name of a person represents this person before the community of God. A name brings and contains a story in itself. That is why I ask you: What name do you give this child?” With joy the parents say the name of their child, then the pastor pours the water and baptizes the child. This moment is precious because our name is giving in the covenant of baptism, and when in our journey of faith, we go through difficult times, we can claim our baptism and that we belong to God.
Prayer:
Gracious and loving God, we give you thanks for our names, because they were given with love from our parents, mothers, fathers, and sometimes grandmas. It is in our baptism that our name is claimed for you, and you claim us as your children. For this we are grateful. Help us to remember that in the name of Jesus, we are saved, and your love is steadfast. In Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen!

Un Nuevo Nombre
Abram tenía noventa y nueve años de edad cuando se le apareció Jehová y le dijo: --Yo soy el Dios Todopoderoso. Anda delante de mí y sé perfecto. Yo haré un pacto contigo y te multiplicaré en gran manera. Entonces Abram se postró sobre su rostro, y Dios habló con él, diciendo:
Este es mi pacto contigo: serás padre de muchedumbre de gentes. No te llamarás más Abram, sino que tu nombre será Abraham, porque te he puesto por padre de muchedumbre de gentes.

Siempre he estado fascinado con el significado de los nombres. Recuerdo que cuando era niño le pregunte a mi padre ¿Por qué usted y mi mama me pusieron el nombre de Jorge? Porque tu eres mi hijo y yo me llamo Jorge, respondió mi padre, por eso te llamas igual que mí, tu nombre es Jorge. Luego ya de joven encontré que el significado del nombre Jorge es “Granjero.” Cuando vine a los Estados Unidos sentí como que me cambiaron el nombre pues para algunas personas se les facilita más llamarme George. Las Escrituras en el libro de Genesis nos cuentan acerca de una persona cuyo nombre fue cambiado por Dios con un propósito especial, este fue Abram.
Abram era de noventa y nueve años de edad cuando Dios le cambio su nombre a Abraham como parte del pacto: “No te llamaras más Abram, sino que tu nombre será Abraham” el nombre de Abram significa “Padre Exaltado” y el nuevo nombre de Abraham significa “Padre de Multitudes.” Este nuevo nombre que Dios dio a Abram, conlleva una bendición de ser el antepasado de una multitud de naciones. Por eso hoy me maravillo de cuantas naciones reclaman a Abraham como su Padre. Esta es una gran bendición para Abraham. Yo creo que todos los nombres son importantes y tienen un significado especial.
En el ritual para bautismos del Himnario Metodista Unido en Español “Mil Voces Para Celebrar” hay una sección en la cual el Pastor/a dice: “Cada nombre es especial e importante ante Dios. Así como Dios cambio los nombres de Abraham, Sara y Jacob el nombre de una persona la representa en la comunidad de Dios. Un nombre también trae y contiene una historia en si mismo, por eso les pregunto: ¿Qué nombre le dan a esta criatura?” Con gozo los padres le dan el nombre del niño/a y el Pastor/a derrama el agua y bautiza al niño/a. Este es un momento precioso porque nuestro nombre es dado en el pacto bautismal, y cuando en nuestra jornada de fe atravesemos por momentos difíciles podamos reclamar nuestro bautismo y que le pertenecemos a Dios.
Oración:
Dios de gracia y amor, te damos gracias por nuestros nombres, porque han sido dados con mucho amor por nuestros padres, madres, y algunas veces por nuestras las abuelas. Es en nuestro bautismo que nuestros nombres son reclamados para ti y tu nos reclamas como tus hijos, por eso estamos agradecidos. Ayúdanos a recordar que en el nombre de Jesus somo salvos, y que tu amor es más fuerte eterno. En Jesucristo nuestro Señor, Amen!
