Baptism Washed
Now when the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” He said to them, “Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written,
‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
teaching human precepts as doctrines.’
You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.”
Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.” For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23)
My reading of Amy Jill Levine reminds me that the Pharisees were once thought to be the open-minded, the reasonable and considerate among the branches of first century Judaism. Discussion of the ‘other,’ reminds me how easy it is to make judgments about others and pass them off as worthy of devotional attention. The way Mark tells it, the considerate faithful are very capable of illusion and hubris. It does me good when something reminds me every ten days or so that Jeremiah said, ‘no one is righteous.’ Jesus steps closer to the faithful and quotes scripture to defend his disciples. All of us have a distance between what is intended in the heart and what slides off the lip. It is from within that harm flows. Richard Rohr has said, ‘if we do not transform our pain, we will surely transmit it.’
It is good to treat our inner life with the recollection of our baptism, and more, to meditate on it. How long has it been since you have sat in a chair or walked on the beach and considered your baptism applied to the sticky and thorny matters in your day? Speaking of washing, I have needed forgiveness for mistakes I have made and hungered to claim that baptism more than once to receive the forgiveness Jesus intends for me. When I lived in Milwaukee County, I used to go to the breakwater just to consider my own baptism. Hence the poem:

the waves keeps
wiping clean
In days when we need to risk leadership to advance racial justice and radical inclusion, we need to learn and grow in love. I have made mistakes and will grieve those. Then I will claim the washing that Jesus promises for my inner life first, then the outer life, too. What might your baptism wash today? What gift of newness does Jesus intend for your life? I believe there is a washing in baptism for all of us. Thanks be to God.
Las tradiciones de los antepasados (Mt 15,1-20)
Se acercaron a Jesús los fariseos y unos maestros de la ley llegados de Jerusalén y vieron que algunos discípulos de Jesús comían con las manos impuras, esto es, sin habérselas lavado. (Porque los fariseos y demás judíos, siguiendo la tradición de sus antepasados, no comen sin antes haberse lavado las manos cuidadosamente. Así, cuando vuelven del mercado, no comen si antes no se lavan. Y guardan también otras muchas costumbres rituales, tales como lavar las copas, las ollas, las vasijas metálicas y hasta las camas). Preguntaron, pues, a Jesús aquellos fariseos y maestros de la ley: — ¿Por qué tus discípulos no respetan la tradición de nuestros antepasados? ¿Por qué se ponen a comer con las manos impuras?
Jesús les contestó:
— ¡Hipócritas! Bien profetizó Isaías acerca de vosotros cuando escribió:
Este pueblo me honra de labios afuera,
pero su corazón está muy lejos de mí.
Inútilmente me rinden culto,
pues enseñan doctrinas
que sólo son preceptos humanos.
Vosotros os apartáis de los mandatos de Dios por seguir las tradiciones humanas.
Mi lectura de Amy Jill Levine me recuerda que alguna vez se pensó que los fariseos eran los de mente abierta, los razonables y considerados entre las ramas del judaísmo del primer siglo. La discusión sobre el "extranjero" me recuerda lo fácil que es emitir juicios sobre los demás y hacerlos pasar por dignos de atención devocional. Tal como lo cuenta Mark, los fieles considerados son muy capaces de caer en esa ilusión y la arrogancia. Me hace bien cuando algo me recuerda cada día más o menos que Jeremías dijo: "nadie es justo". Jesús se acerca a los fieles y cita las Escrituras para defender a sus discípulos. Todos tenemos una discrepancia entre lo que se siente en el corazón y lo que se desliza por el labio. Es desde dentro de donde fluye el daño. Richard Rohr no ha dicho: "si no transformamos nuestro dolor, seguramente lo transmitiremos".
Es bueno tratar nuestra vida interior con el recuerdo de nuestro bautismo, y más, meditar en él. ¿Cuánto tiempo ha pasado desde que se sentó en una silla o caminó por la playa y consideró que su bautismo se aplicaba a los asuntos espinosos y difíciles de su día? Hablando del bautismo, he necesitado el perdón por los errores que he cometido y he tenido hambre de reclamar ese bautismo más de una vez para recibir el perdón que Jesús quiere para mí. Cuando vivía en el condado de Milwaukee, solía ir al rompeolas solo para considerar mi propio bautismo. De ahí el poema:

En los días en que necesitamos arriesgar el liderazgo para promover la justicia racial y la inclusión radical, necesitamos aprender y crecer en amor. He cometido errores y los lamentare. Entonces reclamaré el lavamiento que Jesús promete para mi vida interior primero, luego también para la vida exterior. ¿Qué podría lavar tu bautismo hoy? ¿Qué don de novedad quiere Jesús para tu vida? Creo que hay un lavamiento en el bautismo para todos nosotros. Gracias a Dios.
