Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised

Last week we met virtually for this year’s Annual Conference session. While we attended to much business, were inspired by the wonderful teaching of my episcopal colleague Tracy Malone, engaged in some lovely worship experiences including ordination, and saw many finely crafted videos, it was simply not the same as when we are able to gather together in person. We are not merely individuals who represent congregations at Annual Conference; we are the people of God, and we are an image and example of true beloved community. The people of God belong together.
And our primary purpose when we gather is not to do business, not to process information, and not to passively view worship and teaching done by others. No. When we gather as the church, our primary job and faithful duty is to praise God! We often spend too much time focusing on our differences and problems. Our anxiety about finances and church politics and programmatic goals distracts us from our core reality and task. We are the baptized body of Christ, incarnate and on display for the whole world to see. Those who disdain or reject the church often do so because of what they see when Christians gather. Instead of a body swept up in the love and grace and mercy of God, they just see one more secular organization going about its business, arguing and debating, taking votes and passing judgments.
I truly believe we can be better and we can provide a powerful witness to the world that Christians are different – not better, but blessed; not superior, but more fortunate because we have come to know the truth that God IS love. Just think what we could do were we to actually embrace, embody, and live the words of “They Will Know We Are Christians by Our Love”! So many of our beloved hymns sing messages of unity, harmony, adoration, thanksgiving, praise, and love – amazing grace, even. My soul cries out for a church so swept up in the majesty and grandeur of God that we can do nothing but sing praises.
I so love my Wisconsin people, and what I want more than anything is that we all love one another as God loves us. Reflect on these words from 2 Peter 1:5-11, “For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love. For if these things are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For anyone who lacks these things is short-sighted and blind and is forgetful of the cleansing of past sins. Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more eager to confirm your call and election, for if you do this, you will never stumble. For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.”
Prayer: Let us sing praises to you, O Lord, that you may know we love you and that we want you to work the miracle within us that will allow us to love others as you love us. For you are love, and we are only truly your people when we live in love with all our neighbors. Remind us that our earthly pursuits are never as important as the gift of love we have to share. We pray all in the name of Jesus, the Christ. Amen.

La semana pasada nos reunimos de una manera virtual para nuestra sesión de la Conferencia Anual. A pesar de que atendimos muchos negocios, fuimos inspirados por las maravillosas enseñanzas de mi colega en el Episcopado, la Obispa Tracy Malone, y la participación de en experiencias de cultos de adoración incluyendo el culto de ordenación, y vimos unos videos bien elaborados, pero simplemente no es lo mismo de cuando podemos reunirnos en persona. No somos meramente individuos que solo representamos nuestras congregaciones en la Conferencia Anual, somos el pueblo de Dios, y somos la imagen y el ejemplo de una verdadera comunidad de amor. El pueblo de Dios permanece junto y en comunidad.
Y el propósito primario cuando nos reunimos no es atender los negocios, no el procesar información, y no ver pasivamente los cultos y las enseñanzas hechas por otros. No! cuando nosotros nos reunimos como Iglesia, nuestro trabajo primordial y responsabilidad fiel es ¡alabar a Dios! A menudo gastamos mucho tiempo enfocándonos en nuestras diferencias y problemas. Nuestra ansiedad acerca de las finanzas y las políticas de la Iglesia y las metas de programación nos distraen de nuestra tarea y realidad central. Somos el cuerpo bautizado de Cristo, encarnado y a la vista de todo el mundo. Aquellos en desdén o que rechazan la iglesia a menudo lo hacen por lo que ven que los cristianos hacen cuando se reúnen. En lugar del cuerpo lleno del amor, gracia, y misericordia de Dios, ellos solo ven una organización secular más atendiendo sus negocios, discutiendo, y debatiendo, tomando votos y pasando juicio.

De manera que muchos de nuestros queridos himnos cantan mensajes de unidad, armonía, adoración, acciones de gracias, alabanza, y amor—aun de sublime gracia. Mi alma clama por una Iglesia que se impregne en la majestuosa y grandeza de Dios y que nosotros no podamos hacer otra cosa más que cantar alabanzas a Dios.
Yo amo mucho a mi pueblo de Wisconsin, y lo más que quiero es que todos nos amemos los unos a los otros como Dios nos ama. Reflexione en estas palabras de la carta del Apóstol Pedro en 2 Pedro 1: 5-11 “Por esta razón deben todos ustedes esforzarse en añadir a su fe la buena conducta, a la buena conducta el entendimiento, al entendimiento el dominio propio, al dominio propio la paciencia; a la paciencia, la devoción, a la devoción, el afecto maternal, y al afecto maternal el amor. Si ustedes posen estas cosas y las desarrollan, ni su vida será inútil ni habrán conocido en vano a nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Pero el que no las posee es como un ciego o corto de vista; ha olvidado que fue limpiado de sus pecados pasados. Por eso, hermanos, ya que Dios los ha llamado y escogido, procuren que arraigue en ustedes, pues haciéndolo casi nunca caerán. De este modo se les abrirán de par en par las puertas del reino eterno de nuestro Señor y Salvador Jesucristo.”
Oración: Permítenos cantar alabazas a ti, Oh Señor, de manera que tu sepas que te amamos y queremos que tu hagas milagros dentro de nosotros, para que podamos amar a otros como tu nos amas. Porque tu eres amor, y nosotros somos tu pueblo cuando vivimos en amor con todo nuestro prójimo. Recuérdanos, que nuestras persecuciones terrenales, nunca son tan importantes como el regalo del Amor que tenemos que compartir. Oramos todo esto en el nombre de Jesus. Amen
