Last year around this time in January, our Bishop and the Cabinet were in a mission trip in El Salvador. We worked in painting an elementary school of the Evangelical Methodist Church, had vacation Bible School for a lot of children in different communities, and provided food in communities of need. We enjoyed our mission work and getting to know new brothers and sisters in Christ in the country. Then, we came back, and in the next two month we faced the pandemic of COVID-19. Nobody in the whole could imagined all the implications that this would bring to humankind. Now we know.
As human beings we know our past, we live the present, but we do not know the future. Here we are, at the beginning of a New Year, and we do not know what this year is going to bring. But what a great comfort it is to know that God knows! Psalm 139: 1-6 makes beautiful claims about God:
“God has searched you and known you, God knows when you sit down and when you rise up,
God knows your thoughts, God knows what you’re going to say before you say it.”
A month ago, we were singing, “He sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake…” I know Santa Claus cannot really do that, but according to Psalm 139, God can! God is acquainted with all our ways, God hems us in, behind and before.
Try to wrap your mind around this staggering thought: there are 7.8 billion people on planet earth, and God has his eye on YOU! Before you were born, God had a plan for you, before you were formed in the womb of your mother, God knew you! These are amazing statements about God, and a wonderful knowledge to keep in our mind and heart as we begin this new year. We indeed do not know what this year will bring, but certainly we know that God will be with us. Emmanuel!
Prayer:
Gracious and loving God, we are grateful for the gift of this new year. May we live each day knowing that your steadfast love is with us, with our neighbors and your whole creation. We do not know what this year is going to bring but let us rejoice each day in the gift of life. Through Jesus Christ, Amen!

Un Asombroso Conocimiento,
Jehová, tú me has examinado y conocido. Tú has conocido mi sentarme y mi levantarme.
Has entendido desde lejos mis pensamientos. Has escudriñado mi andar y mi reposo, y todos mis caminos te son conocidos, pues aún no está la palabra en mi lengua y ya tú, Jehová, la sabes toda. Detrás y delante me rodeaste, y sobre mí pusiste tu mano. Tal conocimiento es demasiado maravilloso para mí; ¡alto es, no lo puedo comprender! ….
Tú formaste mis entrañas; me hiciste en el vientre de mi madre. Te alabaré, porque formidables y maravillosas son tus obras; estoy maravillado y mi alma lo sabe muy bien. No fue encubierto de ti mi cuerpo, aunque en oculto fui formado y entretejido en lo más profundo de la tierra.
Mi embrión vieron tus ojos, y en tu libro estaban escritas todas aquellas cosas que fueron luego formadas, sin faltar ni una de ellas. ¡Cuán preciosos, Dios, me son tus pensamientos! ¡Cuán grande es la suma de ellos! El año pasado por este tiempo en Enero, nuestro Obispo y el Gabinete estuvieron en un viaje misionero en El Salvador. Trabajamos pintando una escuela elementaria de la Iglesia Evangélica Metodista, tuvimos Escuela Bíblica de verano para niños/as en diferentes comunidades, y repartimos comida en comunidades que lo necesitaban. Disfrutamos mucho nuestro trabajo misionero y nos gozamos en conocer nuevos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo en el país. Luego, regresamos, y en los próximos dos meses nos encontramos con la pandemia del COVID-19. Nadie en todo el mundo podía imaginarse todas las implicaciones que esto traería a la humanidad. Ahora lo Sabemos.
Como seres humanos conocemos nuestro pasado, vivimos nuestro presente, pero no sabemos el futuro. Aquí estamos en el comienzo de un nuevo año, y no sabemos lo que este año nos va a traer. ¡Pero que alivio es saber que Dios lo sabe! El Salmo 139 hace unas bellas declaraciones acerca de Dios: “Dios nos ha examinado y conocido, Dios conoce nuestro sentar y levantar, Dios conoce nuestros pensamientos, Dios conoce las palabras de nuestra boca aun antes de mencionarlas”
Hace un mes estábamos cantando “El ve cuando estas durmiendo, el sabe cuándo estas despierto…”
Yo se que Santa Claus no puede hacer eso, pero de acuerdo al Salmo 139, Dios sí. Dios conoce nuestros caminos y nos abraza por fuera y por dentro.
Trate de poner su mente en este asombroso pensamiento: Hay 7.8 Billones de gentes en el planeta tierra, y Dios tiene puestos sus ojos en usted! Antes de que usted naciera, Dios tenía un plan para su vida. Antes que usted fuera formado/a en el vientre, ya Dios le conocía. Estas son maravillosas declaraciones de Dios y un asombroso conocimiento para guardar en nuestro corazón y nuestra mente ahora que entramos a un nuevo año. Ciertamente no sabemos que es lo que el nuevo año traerá, pero ciertamente sabemos que Dios estará con nosotros. Emanuel!

Dios de gracia y amor, estamos agradecidos por el regalo de este nuevo año. Que podamos vivir sabiendo que su amor eterno esta con nosotros, con nuestros vecinos, y con toda su creación. No sabemos que es lo que este nuevo año nos traerá, pero gocémonos cada día en el regalo de vida. En Cristo Jesus, Amen!
