Resting in God's Love
Answer me when I call, O God of my right!
You gave me room when I was in distress.
Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.
How long, you people, shall my honor suffer shame?
How long will you love vain words, and seek after lies? Selah
But know that the Lord has set apart the faithful for himself;
the Lord hears when I call to him.
When you are disturbed, do not sin;
ponder it on your beds, and be silent Selah
Offer right sacrifices,
and put your trust in the Lord.
There are many who say, “O that we might see some good!
Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!”
You have put gladness in my heart
more than when their grain and wine abound.
I will both lie down and sleep in peace;
for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.

Have you ever gone through a difficult situation in your life in which you could not see any help coming your way? The Psalmist begins Psalm 4 in deep anguish and ends with deep peace, entrusting himself to God’s providence. How in the world does that happen? Nothing suggests that the source of the Psalmist’s despair has been resolved. We read no “Yes, God! You fixed it.”
The Psalmist cries out to God in his need and then questions those who are the source of his torment, those who shame his honor. At this point, he turns to affirm his confidence in God. The psalmist exhorts his listeners to repentance, he reminds others and perhaps himself that even when we doubt, God remains faithful.
Christ has redeemed our sorrow and our joy trough his death and resurrection. Maybe moments of happiness provide benchmarks to strengthen us when we, like the psalmist, feel pressed on every side. I believe that is why the psalmist sleeps peacefully. Not because everything is “fixed,” but because in life and death he knows that he ----and all of us--- belong to God.
Prayer:
Gracious and merciful God, we give you thanks for your unconditional love. When we have gone through difficult times, your providence has been with us. Here in this prayer, we present all our worries to you, and rest in your love. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen!

Descansando en el Amor de Dios,
¡Respóndeme cuando clamo, Dios, justicia mía! Cuando estaba en angustia, tú me diste alivio. Ten misericordia de mí y oye mi oración. Hijos de los hombres, ¿hasta cuándo volveréis mi honra en infamia, amaréis la vanidad y buscaréis la mentira? ¿Ha usted atravesado alguna vez en su vida por una situación difícil en la cual no podía ver venir ningún tipo de ayuda? El Salmista comienza el Salmos 4 con una profunda angustia y termina con una profunda paz. Confiando el mismo en la providencia de Dios. ¿Como podría esto suceder? Nada aquí sugiere que la fuente de desaliento para el Salmista ha sido resuelta. No leemos un: “Si Dios! Lo arreglaste.”
El Salmista clama a Dios en su necesidad y después cuestiona aquellos quienes son la fuente de su tormento, aquellos que avergüenzan su honor. Es en este punto, que el se vuelve para afirmar su confianza en Dios. El Salmista exhorta a los que lo escuchan hacia un arrepentimiento, les recuerda a otros y quizá a el mismo que aun cuando nosotros dudamos, Dios permanece fiel.
Cristo ha redimido nuestro lamento y nuestro gozo a través de su muerte y resurrección. A lo mejor algunos momentos de felicidad provean algunos puntos de referencia para fortalecernos cuando nosotros, como el Salmista, sentimos la presión por todos lados. Yo creo que por eso el Salmista podía dormir en paz. No porque todo se haya “resuelto y arreglado,” sino porque en la vida y en la muerte el sabe que el----al igual que todos nosotros----le pertenecemos a Dios.
Oración:
Dios de gracia y misericordia, te damos gracias por tu amor incondicional. Cuando hemos atravesado por tiempos difíciles, tu providencia ha estado con nosotros. Aquí en esta oración, te presentamos todas nuestras preocupaciones, y descansamos en tu amor. En el nombre de Jesus oramos. ¡Amen!
