Northcott Neighborhood House is one of the Wisconsin Conference’s Health and Welfare Ministries that supports families, youth, and individuals in the Milwaukee area. They offer a variety of educational, recreational, and training opportunities that enhance the quality of life in the community. Learn more about Northcott and how you can support their mission through the 500x100x3 fundraising campaign.
Northcott Neighborhood House in Milwaukee came into being in 1961. It was the result of Methodist women in the Milwaukee area who helped to take the census and realized that there were thousands of impoverished African-Americans in their assigned area who could use encouragement and help improving their living conditions. Joined by the Board of Global Ministries, they established a neighborhood center, named after Bishop H. Clifford Northcott, and it has been helping to improve the lives of community members ever since.
Currently, Northcott Neighborhood House is in a period of transition. Executive Director Mac Weddle has retired after 42 years of service, and office manager Adriane Griffin has stepped down due to health issues. Tony Kearney, project director for Milwaukee Builds, Northcott’s home re-construction program, is serving as the interim director until a new executive director can be found and hired.
Some of Northcott’s other programs are: GED tutoring, food pantry, free clothing exchange, sports and arts programs for youth, summer camp opportunities, the Juneteenth Celebration, health education programs, and monthly social events for senior citizens. An inter-generational program is planned for this summer, where youth will be taught to cook and will prepare and serve meals to the senior citizens group.
At this time, you may want to consider being part of Northcott’s 500x100x3 fundraising campaign. The goal is for $150,000 to be raised by 500 churches, UMW units or individuals giving $100 three times by the end of 2019. View flyer for more information. Any donation will be helpful to support this important ministry in Wisconsin.
