It has been said that The United Methodist Church doesn’t have an ecclesiology. In 2008, the General Conference established a church- wide Committee on Faith and Order (CFO), and the Council of Bishops asked the committee to guide the Church in reflecting on our ecclesiology.

The research and reflections of the Committee on Faith and Order clearly support that United Methodism does have a theology of Church. The questions are: How do we recall, teach, and remind one another what we believe about Church? What is our identity as a United Methodist Church?

The CFO has shared this paper with the Council of Bishops, with General Conference delegates, and with faculty of United Methodist Studies.
