Purpose

The William Stearns Fund was established in the Last Wills and Testaments of Eva and Alice E. Stearns in memory of their father, William Stearns. The fund was established to make loans to students attending a University of Wisconsin system school.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a member of The United Methodist Church– Wisconsin Conference. Church attendance or participation in church activities does not constitute church membership. Only those who have been received into full membership are eligible.
  • Be admitted to a degree program of the University of Wisconsin system. Loans are not made to students on academic or disciplinary probation.
  • Applicant must be registered and in classroom attendance for the term in which the funds are to be used before the loan can be finalized.
  • Total loan(s) per applicant will not exceed $10,000. A student may apply multiple times. Interest on the loan is calculated at one-point below the prime rate on the date of taking out the loan.

Application Procedure

  • Loans are payable in monthly installments, beginning no later than six months after the borrower discontinues at least one half time school attendance, or a maximum of seven years from the date of the note, which ever first occurs. The repayment period begins on the due date of the first installment and may extend five years.
