To enhance the recipient’s professional competence and thereby help to perpetuate the standards exemplified by Ralph Stoody and Arthur West. Religious journalism is interpreted to include news writing for secular press, church press, and for church institutions.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be enrolled at an accredited United States college or university in post-graduate study.
  • Submit evidence of your application or acceptance by an accredited and approved graduate school or department in the United States.
  • Two one-time awards of $6000 will be made each year, one of which will be given to a graduate student who is a member of The United Methodist Church.
  • Letter of recommendation from student’s local church pastor or denominational official.
  • Letter of recommendation from the chairperson of the department in which major undergraduate work was done.
  • Letter of recommendation from an employer or supervisor for whom the graduate student has worked professionally as a journalist.
  • If any of the above three persons is not available, a letter from a person related to journalism and personally acquainted with the graduate student may be substituted.
  • All letters of recommendation must be sent by the writer directly to the Fellowship Committee, United Methodist Communications.
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended must be submitted by the school.
  • Statement of 500 words or less must be submitted regarding interest in religious journalism and plans for the future, both academic and professional.
  • Submit four examples of journalistic work in any standard journalistic medium; also a list of published articles.
  • Submit a recent glossy photograph, preferably head and shoulders, suitable for publicity use.
