To enable ethnic minority students to continue his/her studies in communication and to promote a level of excellence in communications on the undergraduate level by ethnic minority students. The term, “communication” is meant to cover such media as audio-visual, electronic, and print journalism. The scholarship is $2500.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be member of an ethnic minority.
  • Must be enrolled at the junior or senior level in the journalism or communication department of a duly accredited college or university in the United States.
  • Two one-time awards will be made, one of which will be given to an ethnic minority student who is a member of The United Methodist Church.
  • Letter of recommendation from student’s local church pastor or denominational official.
  • Letter of recommendation from the chairperson of the department in which the student is majoring.
  • Letter of recommendation from an employer or supervisor for whom the student has worked as a journalist.
  • If any of the above three persons is not available, a letter from a person related to journalism and personally acquainted with the student may be substituted.
  • All letters of recommendation must be sent by the writer directly to the Scholarship Committee, United Methodist Communications.
  • Office transcripts from all institutions attended must be submitted.
  • Statement of 500 words or less must be submitted regarding interest in religious journalism and planned course of study.
  • Submit no more than three (3) examples of journalistic work (audio-visual, electronic, print).
  • Submit a recent glossy photograph, preferably head and shoulders, suitable for publicity use.

  • Application forms may be obtained from the Scholarship Committee, United Methodist Communications, Public Media Division (see below)
  • Submit applications and all supporting documents no later than March 15.
