The 32nd Annual SPUMC Garage Sale at Sun Prairie United Methodist Church is in the books! Proceeds from this year’s sale totaled over $11,500 and have been distributed to the Food Pantry, various Scholarships, The VA Hospital Vern Piper Fund, DAIS, Heifer (will be triple matched by special donors promotion), UMCOR Disaster Relief,  Shop with a Cop, LOGOS trip scholarships, the Wesley Fund, the purchase of some bells for the Bell Choir, Shelter from the Storm, the Sun Prairie Pastoral Care picnic,  and the Boiler Fund. They also were able to donate items to their own ministries, such as Children’s Ministries and their offices, and outside groups, including the Humane Society. All items left over were donated to St. Vinny's.

Sun Prairie UMC enjoys hearing where their items are going and how they are being “recycled.” One woman from their church family picked up a lot of leftover yarn as her daughter and granddaughter make lap blankets for nursing homes, hats for newborn infants and have even made prayer blankets for returning veterans in red, white and blue. They also took a vehicle full of leftover clothes and houseware items down to the “Clothes Closet” in Whitewater, a place that gives away clothes and household items for free to those in need. This was a ministry that they learned about in confirmation this year and got to work at during a retreat this winter.

Besides the items for resale, SPUMC also had a bake sale, cinnamon rolls and coffee for sale and a brat stand, which was able to raise over $1,200 to go towards Shelter From the Storm, a shelter for homeless women and children in Sun Prairie and Habitat for Humanities.

The garage sale wouldn’t happen without such wonderful people! SPUMC averaged 35-40 volunteers every day! That’s a lot of hands folding, cleaning, sorting, laughing, joking, meeting new people, and working toward a common goal of making life better for those in their church, community, nation and world through their donations to missions.

The Garage Sale is a much anticipated tradition at the Sun Prairie UMC. It’s a lot of work, but very rewarding to be able to help donate to missions in their church, their community, the country and our world!
