Mike Halonen, the owner of Big Apple Bagels in Superior, was concerned about the recent hurricane disasters and heard about the great work of The United Methodist Church through UMCOR, as was reported in USA Today. He talked with Rev. Joel Certa-Werner, Lead Pastor of Faith UMC in Superior, about it, and asked if Faith UMC was helping with the disaster relief.

When Rev. Certa-Werner explained to him what they were doing, Halonen surprised the congregation with certificates to be handed out to everyone in worship on Sunday, Nov. 5 – as his way of “cheering on” the great work that the congregation was connected to through UMCOR. He played off Jesus’ words about “giving a cup of cold water” (Matt. 10:42), therein offering free beverages to the congregation throughout the following week!

Big Apple Bagels also donates bagels to Faith UMC weekly for the coffee bar. Rev. Joel Certa-Werner said, “Mike and all at Big Apple Bagels continue to bless the ministry of our church and God’s Kingdom in a mighty way. He may have cheered us on, but we want to cheer on the generous, God-honoring concerns of Mike and all at the Superior Big Apple Bagel shop!”
