SPECIAL MUSIC FOR SUMMER

Help is needed to provide special music for the worship services during the summer months. The choir has the summer months off (a much deserved vacation) so others must fill in. If you have a special talent in music and would be willing to share it, please call Myrt Jeske at 421-4239. Thank you for your help.

United Methodist NOMADS

The United Methodist Church has an exciting ministry experience for members who have recreational vehicles (motor homes or travel trailers). It is called NOMADS, which stands for Nomads on a Mission Active in Divine Service. These are people (there are now 1,200 of them) who travel to places of their choice to serve the church in the United States working on projects of mission for a short term. This may be on a college campus, at our church camps, at children’s homes, etc. that are operated by our church. In 2006, near two million dollars of volunteer service was given to these outreach ministries by our NOMADS.

If you would like more information on this ministry please contact:

STARS AND STRIPES

Since the early 1800’s various groups have observed a day to display the American flag. Presidents Woodrow Wilson (in 1916) and Calvin Coolidge (in 1927) issued proclamations marking June 14 as National Flag Day. But it wasn’t until August 3, 1949, that Congress approved June 14 as a day of national observance. President Harry Truman signed it into law.

The American flag has changed designs more than any other flag in the world. In fact, the United States didn’t have a standardized flag until 1912! And even after standardization, the flag changed three more times with the addition of new stars representing new states.

A Jar for Tears

When our children were small and began to cry excessively, I’d say, "Keep crying, but wait until I get a jar. I want to catch your tears and save them." Then I would pretend to search for the suggested vessel.

The ruse worked every time. The children would quiet down and begin laughing at my ridiculous antics.

A jar for tears? In biblical times there were such things. Biblical scholar James Fleming makes several suggestions about the possible use of tear jars by biblical characters.

Remember the woman who cried at Jesus’ feet? The sorrow she felt about her wayward lifestyle may have caused her to bring a jar of her tears, and then add to them as she cried near Jesus. She would have plenty of tears to wipe up with her hair afterward.

When the author of Psalm 23 wrote about his cup running over, Fleming suggests he may have meant his tear cup was filled with tears of joy due to God’s goodness.

Tear cups are still available in Old Jerusalem antiquities stores. And at the Vatican Museum in Rome, a large glass cabinet is filled with ancient tear cups.

PEACE WITH JUSTICE SUNDAY

JUNE 3

Across the United Methodist Church, compassionate people respond to God’s call to be peacemakers. They advocate for human rights, buy fair-trade products, care for the environment, demonstrate for a cause, eradicate poverty, feed hungry people, mediate conflict, provide health care, seek affordable housing and model nonviolence.

Because of the special offering received on Peace with Justice Sunday, God’s people learn to coexist lovingly and peacefully. Global outreach through the General Board of Church and Society and annual conference-related peace with justice ministries transform lives.

Please give generously on Peace with Justice Sunday, the first Sunday after Pentecost. Your gift makes a world of difference! Thank you!

A FRIEND OF THE LORD

An elderly woman relied on her son to take her to worship, especially if she knew the congregation would be celebrating Holy Communion.

One Sunday, as they drove to church, her son asked, "Mom, why are you always so concerned about going to worship when Communion is going to be served?"

Without hesitation, she replied, "Son, on the last night of Jesus’ earthly life when he was with his friends in the Upper Room, he took bread and wine and said they represented his body and his blood. He requested that his friends take bread and wine often and to remember him in that manner. Son, I am a friend of the Lord and I take Communion to remember him."
