First Church’s housing ministry opportunities - "Apostle's Build"
Housing Ministry and Habitat news As the fall season starts up, so does FUMC’s housing ministry. This year, we will once again be involved in an “Apostles Build” where we are in partnership with a number of area Dane County Churches to raise funds, provide labor, and other targeted support for a new Habitat for Humanity home. The new Habitat home will be built in the Twin Oaks subdivision near McFarland, where FUMC has contributed to Habitat homes the past two years (for the Cantu and Severson families). The new home is for the family of Sia Xiong, a single Hmong woman who is raising 6 minor children and also providing for two adult children who still live with her. Sia has 5 daughters: Youa (21), Bao (18), Maineng (16), Kaotee (9), and Maikao (7). Sia also has 3 sons: Kongxeng (14), Charlie (5), and Gerald (4). Sia’s two older children are enrolled at MATC and also hold part-time jobs to pay for their schooling expenses. Sia works full time as a custodian at Mendota Health. Sia said that no one in her family has ever owned their own home and are very excited that “home ownership” will soon be a reality. The kickoff “build” for the Xiong family was held on September 16th. If you are interested in volunteering your time and talents in the actual “house build” please contact Christine White (Christinewhite@ameritech.net) or call her at 241-0304. In the coming weeks, there will also be opportunities to volunteer in other ways: i.e., making a financial contribution, donating food, etc., along with offering your prayer support! We look forward to moving ahead on another Habitat build and to FUMC’s involvement in this important outreach ministry! — Kathy Groth
