What is the FUMC Foundation?

The First United Methodist Church Foundation is an endowment fund that has been created to support worthwhile religious, educational and charitable projects within the church that are not usually or sufficiently included in the annual church budget. As an endowment fund, the Foundation's principal is invested to provide future income; the income is then used to fund requested grants. The principal remains intact, ensuring that your gift will continue to support future church programs for the years to come. A gift to the Foundation is truly a gift that keeps on giving!

Can I honor or memorialize someone with a gift to the Foundation?

Yes! Contributions are often given in memory of a loved one who has passed on, or in honor of a friend or relative. A contribution to the Foundation in someone's name can be a wonderful gift for the person who has everything.

How are grants awarded?

Grant application forms are available from the church office or you may download a copy of the application form by clicking here. Grants are funded by the General Fund (other funds within the Foundation are already designated for specific purposes). Grants are considered six times a year. The first step is an initial review and endorsement by the Administrative Council. This review by Ad Council is intended to provide advice on the priorities of FUMC. The second step for the grant application is the final review and approval action by the Foundation Board.

How can I give to the FUMC Foundation?

You may contact the church office at 203 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, WI 53703 or call 608-256-9061.

There are several different ways that you can give:

  • Cash: A cash gift is a convenient way to support the Foundation.

  • Securities and real estate: Stocks, bonds, mutual fund shares or real estate may be donated directly to the Foundation.

  • Insurance policy/pension: Consider listing FUMC as the beneficiary on the life insurance policy or pension fund you now hold. You may find your original reason for purchasing the life insurance policy no longer exists or that your financial situation has changed. You may also make a gift of the unneeded policy for its cash or surrender value.

  • Bequests: When you prepare your will you can leave the Foundation a gift in the form of cash, securities, real estate or other assets. You can give a percentage of your estate, a dollar amount, or leave specific properties.

  • Trusts/annuities: A charitable gift annuity or a charitable remainder trust can be set up to provide you with income for property for the rest of your life, while ensuring that the Foundation benefits from the remainder of the trust or annuity upon your death. You give the fit of property now, but continue to benefit from fixed or flexible income, as well as potential tax benefits. Consult your financial planner for more information.

Can I designate how my donation will be used?

The Foundation Board encourages you to donate to the General Fund. The fund can be tapped at the discretion of the Ad Council and the Foundation Board to finance new programs and ministries as the need arises. Donating to the General Fund allows the Ad Council and the Foundation Board to award grants for worthy and exciting new projects that might now have been anticipated at the time of the donation.

There are also several funds currently set up with specific designations:

  • Foundation General Fund: used to support the ministries of the church

  • Nurturing Ministries: N.M General Fund; Older Adult Council Fund; Library Fund; Spiegel Music Fund

  • Outreach and Missions: Outreach and Missions General Fund; Ministers Fund; Food Pantry Directors Salary Fund; Brockhaus Fund; Irene and Earnest Walker Fund; Benevolence Fund

  • Youth Development: Youth Development General Fund; Alton Scholarship Fund; Irene and Earnest Walker Fund

  • Witness Ministries: Witness Ministries General Fund

If you wish, you may work with the Foundation Board to establish a specific designation for your contribution, either with one of the funds above, or with a designation of your own.
