No, we didn't learn everything we need to know about God in Sunday School. Every day we change, become a little different. What we thought about God (and almost everything else!) at age 12 is different now, too. See what there is to learn.

Lenten Small Group Studies

During Lent we are invited to explore John Wesley’s General Rules (do no harm, do good, stay in love with God) through a short, but profoundly spiritual book titled, Three Simple Rules. Copies of the book are available at no cost to all interested members and friends. Stop at the table in the Octagon to pick up a copy for your household and if you’re able, take an address card of a homebound member and extra book to deliver to that member.

In addition to the weekly reading, some may want to participate in small groups including short video clips and opportunities to discuss the practical applications of the three simple rules. Sign-up sheets are available at the book table.

Small Group Times and Locations:

  • Sundays, 9:30 a.m. in Room 208
  • Tuesdays, 12:00 p.m. in Room 203
  • Wednesdays, 10:30 a.m. in Room 203
  • Thursdays, 7:45 p.m. in Fellowship Hall

Education Ministries on Sunday Mornings

Inner Work
Sundays in Room 203, 11 a.m. - noon, February 21 - March 28
Facilitated by Boris Matthews

Inner Work is the spiritual discipline of attending to dreams and visions. Just as Joseph’s dream advised him to escape to Egypt with Mary and Jesus, our dreams supply the information our conscious minds lack so that we can live in accord with our larger self – God’s design for us.

Over six Sundays, participants will study Robert Johnson’s classic text, Inner Work, learning about the language of dreams, how to work with our dreams, and the discipline of active imagination.

The Journey
Sundays in Room 208, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.
Facilitated by various attendees

With a focus toward parents and couples, this fellowship-based class meets with a topic and discussion format to share life’s journeys together. Topics vary, though they frequently include parenting, our faith, the Bible, marriage enrichment, and many more. Join the group for a single Sunday or become a regular participant.

Theology for the 21
st Century
Sundays in Room LL05, 10:45 a.m.
Facilitated by various attendees

Starting on Sunday, January 3, the class will be reading John Shelby Spong's The Sins of Scripture: Exposing the Bible's Texts of Hate to Reveal the God of Love. Bishop Spong is the upcoming Lyons Lecturer at First Church (April 10, 2010). Each week a different (volunteer) member of the class leads discussion of a chapter in the book. Every discussion is lively, the book is a provocative read, and all interested parties are welcome!

The Christian Adventure

Sundays in Room 208, 11 a.m. - noon
Facilitated by various attendees

The goal of this class is to provide interesting, enlightening and lively conversation that helps participants focus on faithful perspectives in the midst of daily adventures. Discussion is generated by books chosen by the group with weekly facilitation by group members who have volunteered to lead conversation for the morning.

On January 31st the class will begin discussion of Eternal Life: A New Vision, one of John Shelby Spong’s most recent books and the topic of his preaching when he is with us in April. Spong combines discussions of science, theology, and our human need to seek meaning, purpose and victory over mortality. Subtitled: Beyond Religion, Beyond Theism, Beyond Heaven and Hell, his book suggests the possibilities of new doorways into life, into timelessness, and into the mystical experience of being one with the presence of the holy.

Education Opportunities during the week

Faith and Reason (ongoing monthly meetings)
Second Tuesday of the month at Capitol Lakes in the Premier Room, 7:30 - 8:30 AM
Facilitated by attendees

How do faith and reason relate as we mature in our understandings? Can science, recent biblical scholarship and cutting-edge theological perspectives help us grow and deepen our faith? These and other questions are discussed each month in a variety of formats.
Contact David Slautterback for more information: slautterback@sbcglobal.net.

Yoga for Good (repeating six-week series)
Mondays in the Chapel, 11:45 AM - 12:45 PM
Wednesdays in the Music Room, 6:30 - 7:30 PM
Facilitated by Meg Wambach

Feel good and do good with Yoga! A $30 fee for the six-week series will serve as a fund raiser for the pantry and pay a small stipend to the course instructor. Meg promises she can make yoga accessible to everyone using modifications and moderation. The class, suitable for beginners, will include breathing, stretching, and relaxation techniques to enhance the mind-body-spirit connection. Bring your own exercise mat or we have a mat you may use.

Meditation Group (ongoing small group experience)
Mondays in the Chapel, 7 - 8:30 PM

Following 30 minutes of meditation the group reads and discusses a book they have chosen focused on meditation or spirituality. Experience a variety of meditation techniques with a small group in our chapel each week. Participants with or without previous experience in meditation are welcome.
