Wisconsin Conceal / Carry Resources
Dear Clergy and Lay Leaders of the Wisconsin Conference of the United Methodist Church,
Recently, we sent you an e-mail about the conceal/carry weapons law that will take effect in November. Since that time, the press secretary for Governor Walker’s office has issued a statement concerning the Emergency Concealed Carry Rules that were created by the Department of Justice. With the conceal/carry law beginning on November 1st, emergency rules will be in effect until permanent rules can be crafted. Rules regarding posting will not change as a result of the Emergency Regulations. Therefore, if churches decide to display a sign indicating that weapons are NOT allowed on church property, the guidelines will remain as follows:
- be at least 5x7 inches in size
- clearly state that no weapons can be allowed in the building
- be posted at every entrance to the building.
The Wisconsin Conference UMC Chancellor recommends that you contact your local authorities after you have posted a sign to let them know you have done so. In regard to posting land, the law only provides that the sign must provide an “appropriate notice” and the name of the person giving the notice (listing self as either the owner of occupant). Wis. Stats. § 943.13(2)am1. In regard to other locations the sign must simply state the restriction imposed. Wis. Stats. § 943.13(2)(bm)1. At a minimum the sign must inform people that weapons or firearms are prohibited.
