Getting to the Heart of the Matter

Parish Nursing is a unique, specialized practice of professional nursing that focuses on the promotion of wholistic health in a faith community, such as a church, synagogue, or mosque. Parish Nursing ministers to the needs of the individual, the family and the community the church serves. The Parish Nurse serves within the context of the values, beliefs and practices of the faith community and in accord with its mission and ministry.

Parish Nursing integrates education, advocacy and referrals with the gift of healing presence, which is the condition of being consciously and compassionately in the present moment with another. Healing presence affirms an individual's potential for wholeness, regardless of their life circumstances.

Mission Statement of Parish Nursing Steering Committee:

A group of parish nurses working together to increase understanding of the role of parish nurses in the healing ministry of the faith community.

History:

  • One hundred years ago leaders in the health field practiced in Christian Churches, which began in answer to Jesus' mandate to care for each other.
  • In 1980 Rev. Dr. Granger Westberg recognized the nurse as essential to wholistic health. The nurse is the one component of the system that could communicate at all levels of the healing process.
  • In 1998 Faith Community Nursing was formally recognized as a specialty practice by the American Nurses Association. The Scope and Standards of Parish Nursing Practice were developed. In 2005 the standards were revised to be more inclusive and were renamed Faith Community Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice.

How to Start a Parish Nurse Program:

  • Recognize parish nursing as a calling to serve in the church. Parish Nursing focuses on the wholistic approach to wellness of body, mind and spirit.
  • Affirm that God is life giving, and the church is called to share Christ's ministry of calling God's people to wholeness. A congregation/circuit could explore the possibility of Parish Nursing and a desire to become active in this ministry of health.
  • Know that a Parish Nurse must hold a current nursing license and have completed a basic parish nurse preparation program. (35 contact hours)
  • Develop a Health Ministry Committee, according to the size of the congregation.
  • Develop a health needs survey to determine the needs of the congregation and community.

Installation/Commissioning Service for the Parish Nurse:

  • Adapt a service from the Methodist Book of Worship
  • Develop a link to an Installation Service
