What services do you provide for the people of the Wisconsin United Methodist Church:

The services that each District Superintendent provides are outlined in Paragraph #419 of the 2000 UM Discipline. The specific duties fall under these headings: spiritual and pastoral leadership; supervision; personnel; administration; and program. In addition to these general duties, I am the Cabinet member who relates to the Board of Ordained Ministry, and I have responsibility for pastors who are appointed to Extension Ministry.

What you enjoy most about your job:

  1. Teaching adults, both lay and clergy.
  2. Fostering the growth of relationships and mutual caring among people who are in ministry together; in other words, building teams.
  3. Working with lay and clergy as we explore together ways for congregations to become more vital and relevant to the people.
  4. Connecting people who have questions with others who have similar questions and, sometimes, with people who have good answers to give.

A dream you have for your particular area of work:

I actually have several dreams:

  1. I dream that all of our congregations will be open and welcoming to ALL of God's children.
  2. I dream that an increasing number of congregations will exhibit energy, passion, honesty, and integrity so that most of my phone calls and meetings will be about ministry—either expanding a current outreach or starting a new ministry in the community or region.
  3. I dream that there will continue to be moments when a group sees value in a particular ministry, when it recognizes that they have the gifts to continue it, and when they accept ownership for its future.
  4. I dream for the day when people will use the term "conference" and realize that they are talking about themselves as well as all the support staff who work with local churches.
