Bibles for Russian Churches —
Bashford UMC has had a connection for many years with Russian churches. We had a missionary visit us a few years ago and he told us much about the struggles of the emerging church in Russia. It is still difficult to be a Christian in Russia, but the situation is improving. In the past decade more than 100 new churches have begun. Most of these congregations meet in homes of rented spaces. A few have pastors. They lack basic things like telephones, computers and even Bibles. This is where we come in. These Christians need the Bibles that we take for granted. Through this mission project we can supple Bibles for Christians who need them so badly.
Nothing But Nets —
The United Methodist Church has been in mission across Africa for more than 160 years. We are now involved with a campaign called "Nothing But Nets." Very simply put, this campaign supplies bed nets to protect people in Africa from malaria. Malaria, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, infects more than 500 million people a year and kills more than a million. Malaria is a preventable disease. There is a simple and cost effective solution. For just $10 we can purchase a bed net, deliver it to a family and explain its use. Although $10 for a bed net may not sound like a lot of money, the cost makes them out of reach for most people at risk of malaria, many of whom survive on less than $1 a day. Once money is raised, Nothing But Nets works with the American Red Cross, The US Center for Disease Control, The UN Foundation, The World Health Organization and UNICEF to purchase the bed nets and distribute them to communities in the greatest need.
The Missions committee is asking you to donate money to these mission projects. Please call the church office for information regarding a donation at 608-249-9222 or submit your donation in an envelope into the offering plate during worship. Offerings may be designated to go to one of these missions specifically by marking your envelope with "One Great Hour of Sharing", "Bibles for Russian Churches" or "Nothing But Nets." Otherwise, envelopes marked "Missions" or offerings of spare change in the offering plate during worship services will be divided equally amongst the three aforementioned missions.
