MEET OUR MEMBER
ELAINE BELONGER
Elaine Keip was born on a farm in Faribault, Mn. However,
she was not destined to be a farm girl. When she was 6 months old
the family moved to Two Rivers.
In her early teens, Elaine met a girl named Kathryn
Koeser (Do you remember her?) who invited her to join the Youth Group
at this church. Elaine said, "I came, I liked it! And I joined the
church when I was 18. As a Girl Scout Leader she assisted Margaret
Miller with the Troop. For many years to the present day Elaine has
been leading Bible Study groups on Wednesdays and Sundays, and still
does. She has also served on numerous church committees over the years.
She attended the former Washington High School in Two
Rivers where she met Ivan Belonger. They were married in 1941.
The couple lived above the upholstery shop known as
Belonger & Son. Elaine assisted Ivan doing upholstery work. She also
started a little store in the same location. It was called Candyland
and supplied school kids with fresh sweet rolls and candy on their
way to school.
And, there were about to get even busier! Elaine blessed
Ivan with 6 boys and 2 girls..and life was always exciting! The children
grew up, left the nest, and now they live all over the planet. And,
Mother Elaine visits them whenever they send her an airline ticket.
Now, as a widow, Elaine lives just outside the northern
city limits of Two Rivers. Her log cabin overlooks a forest where
she enjoys plenty of visitors...squirrels, rabbits, opossum, songbirds,
even wild turkeys that tap on her patio windows! They are Elaine's
best friends. She loves them all..in addition to her church, her human
friends, and of course, God, who is always close to her heart.
I think you will agree that..Elaine Belonger is a very
special lady!
There, I said it and I'm glad!

Emanuel UMW to offer "PRAYER" Mission Study in June
PRAYER CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE IF YOU WILL LET IT!!!
Do you know the power of prayer? Do you use it effectively
in your own lives and the lives of your loved ones? What makes a prayer
powerful and effective? Why do we pray in the first place? If you
have ever asked yourself these questions or any others regarding prayer,
you may find some of the answers at our mission study of Prayer this
June.
We will be using the book "Concerning Prayer" by Mary
Kathryn Pearce. This is a Bible based and United Methodist-sponsored
program. If you are interested in this Mission Study, please call
Jackie Ackerman at 793-1594 to sign up or call the church office.
This will be a 4-week session meeting Wednesdays from 5:30-7:00 on
June 1, 8, 22, 29. You must sign up by May 12, 2005 so that we can
have the books here on time.
Thank you for your interest and support of Emanuel
United Methodist Women and their efforts to bring mission study opportunities
to Emanuel and Zion Churches.

WINDOW WORSHIP
HAND OF GOD
Scripture: Isaiah 49:16a "Behold I have engraved thee
upon the palms of My hands..."
The hand of God can represent blessing or punishment.
It gives strength to the faithful and shows tenderness. This writing
is going to focus on the tenderness.
God measures out the waters with the hollow of His
hand (Isaiah 40:12). God does not have a physical hand because He
is a Spirit. To me, picturing the size of His hand in such a way suggests
the amount of love that He has to give to each individual of th earth.
When Jesus, God incarnate, fed the 4,000, He did so because He had
compassion on all of them at tone time. This enormous capacity of
His love goes beyond my understanding.
The second half of verse 16 says, "...thy walls are
always before Me." Isaiah wrote this when the walls of Jerusalem lay
in ruins. Even though Israel forsook God, He desired their restoration.
He longs for people to become whole. God was a husband (Jeremiah 31:
2, 32) to Israel, yet Israel broke their vow that they made to God
by loving other gods, serving them, putting their trust in them. The
result was a fallen Jerusalem as those gods were useless against the
enemy. God's love is everlasting, and with His loving kindness He
drew them (and draws us) to Himself. God delights (Psalm 18:19) in
us. Therefore, He is our hiding place (Psalm 119:114) and he fulfills
our desires (Psalm 145:19). Perhaps we should say to God, with the
psalmist (Psalm 63:8) "Dear God,/ My soul follows hard after Thee.
/ Thy right hand upholds me./" Yours truly, Me.
Hymn: "How Firm A Foundation" (verse 2). UMH # 529

REVEREND WILLIAM C. F. HAYES 1943 - 1947 Note: Not having
been here in that era, I contacted some more "senior" members for
information. Shirley Wilsmann provided such an interesting and informative
account that I decided to pass it on to the congregation as written.
Thank you, Shirley. The Reverend William C. F. Hayes and his wife,
Lena, along with one son, Franklin (Buddy) occupied the parsonage
at the corner of 13th and Madison Streets. Reverend Hayes followed
Reverend Franklin Schlueter as Emanuel's pastor. The church was called
Emanuel Evangelical Church at that time as this was prior to the merger
with United Brethren Church. On the first Sunday that Reverend Hayes
was in our pulpit, he said that occupying the parsonage hadn't changed
much in the transition from Reverend Schlueter to Reverend Hayes.
Both pastors had a wife, Lena, both had a Franklin, and as far as
"Bills", there are always bills at the parsonage. Reverend Hayes was
a deeply prophetic and religious man. His sermons, though sometimes
beyond the realm of our understanding, could often be called service
orations. The wife of Reverend Hayes, Lena, was a dramatic artist
and performed many readings for the congregation. One memorable presentation
that she repeated each Good Friday was entitled "The Wife of Pontius
Pilate". She did it with so much feeling and so dramatically that
most listeners were moved to tears. Lena Hayes was also a soprano
soloist and sang in the choir. After serving four years Emanuel's
pastor, Reverend Hayes was made District Superintendent and spent
the last years of formal ministry in the Madison area. Reverend Hayes
and his wife returned to Two Rivers in 1952 to take part in the note
burning celebration service marking the end of the original debt of
Emanuel Church. The theme of this event was called "Victory". Fulfilling
the payment of the debt was a tremendous victory. The final marriage
that Reverend Hayes performed at Emanuel Church was on September 18,
1946, joining Marion Dose and Paul Stegeman in matrimony. Just think!
That was 58 years ago. After his retirement and after the death of
his wife, Lena, Reverend Hayes spent his remaining years at Evergreen
Manor, a retirement home in Fond du Lac. Dale Lium

THE WISCONSIN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CONFERENCE ORDAINS
THE FIRST HISPANIC FEMALE PASTOR
That announcement was a historical moment for Pastor
Sonia Alvarado, and for other Hispanic women in ministry.
Born in Guatamala, she moved to the United States in
1979 at the age of 16. She graduated from the University of Dubuque
Theological Seminary with a Masters in Divinity in 2001. Her husband,
Julio Alvarado, is also an ordained Methodist Minister now serving
America Latina – a Hispanic Congregation in Green Bay. The couple
have 2 children.
Please Note: If you are making decisions now regarding
your future career be sure to read the process of becoming an Ordained
Minister. The 6 steps are outlined here in brief. For more information
call (920-793-1717) and ask for Pastor Sonia Alvarado.
In order that the United Methodist Church may be assured
that those persons who present themselves as candidates for ministry,
are truly called of GOD to this office. Some steps need to be completed.
Each candidate needs to go through a process prescribed by the Division
of Ordained Ministry and the General Board of Higher Education and
Ministry.
THOSE STEPS INCLUDE:
1. Become an "Inquiring Candidate": Upon hearing a
call to ministry the candidate should read the vocational guide "THE
CHRISTIAN AS MINISTER". This book should be discussed in consultation
with the candidates's own Pastor, or another United Methodist Minister.
2. The Exploring Candidate. Those seeking to explore
being a candidate for ordained ministry shall apply in writing, to
the District Superintendent for admission to studies. You are now
an Exploring candidate to be assigned to a supervising Pastor.
3. Declared Candidate. After completing steps 1 and
2 the candidate prepares a written request of reasons why he/she wants
to be an ordained minister. It will be submitted to your local church
Pastor and his committee on Pastor-Parish Relations.
4. After your local church has given you a favorable
recommendation you become a certified candidate. But, now its time
to appear before the District Committee for their examination. At
this time you must complete the first Psychological and aptitude tests.
Assuming you pass, you now need to be enrolled as a student in a school,
college, university, or a school of Theology.
5. A candidate for probationary membership must have
been graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in liberal education, or an
equivalent degree in a college or university listed by the University
Senate. After you complete your Masters in Divinity (M. Div) you become
a probationary minister to be assigned to a local church setting,
for at least 3 years in a full time appointment.
6. Now...you are ready for the final step in the process
of ordination! The Ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church has
full authority for the ministry. WORD..(preaching and teaching), THE
SACRAMENTS (Communion and Baptism), ORDER (administration) and SERVICE
(missions). As an ordained elder you become a member in full connection
within the life of the annual conference. The whole process takes
between 8-10 years.
Pastor Alvarado proudly says "I was able to do it in
8 years...thanks be to GOD!"

MAY MISSION NEWS: JUST A REMINDER.......
We are collecting "New Baby Clothes" for the Annual
Conference mission project. Please bring your donated items to church
by Sunday, June 5th so that our delegates can take them to the 2005
Annual Conference In-Gathering, June 12-15 in Madison. A table has
been set up in the back of church for your convenience.
Thanks to all who attended the Lakeshore Interfaith
Hospitality Network training session and to all who donated food or
monetary gifts. Response was wonderful from both Zion and Emanuel.

Trustee's Report, April 2005
Here's what is going on in the Trustee world:
The 13th Street Door Fund is up to $3,231+.
The Trustees have picked Quality Building Restoration
Company, Inc to do the exterior brickwork. The Trustees have picked
Van Der Hoff Studios to do the storm window replacement and the sanctuary
cleaning and repainting. The Trustees have developed a work plan to
accomplish these tasks. The recommendations and work plan have been
forwarded to the Finance Committee for its action. We are still reviewing
the bids for the 13th Street door and hope to pick a contractor soon.
Don Hallwachs filed down the edges of the front door
(again) to loosen the front door. The raw wood was re-stained. When
the weather is warmer, the edges will be treated with spar varnish.
The Schaus Company came and repaired the roof tiles
and the cap tiles. The bill was approximately $941.00. Thanks to the
members who responded to provide the emergency funds to pay for this
work.
Two splash plates have been purchased and installed
under the downspouts on 13th Street.
The Trustees wish to express our deepest sympathy to
Gwen Buehler on the loss of her husband Ken. He was a good and faithful
servant of the church and the Trustees.
Note: We need the cooperation of everyone in the congregation
to make sure that we use church resources sparingly and wisely AND
that we close windows, close doors, turn off appliances, turn off
lights and lock doors when we are done. "A penny saved is a penny
earned."
Donald A. Hallwachs Chairman, Trustee Committee
