THE UNITED MESSENGER
"Come Worship With Us!"

MAY, 2005

FROM THE PASTOR

Hello, everyone! It has been a year already since my family and I moved to Two Rivers-Mishicot Circuit to be in ministry with you all. The Lord has blessed us with a great number of new friends who have welcomed us and made our transition run as smoothly and as comfortable as possible. We thank you for your kindness and sincere concern for us.

For the last year, we have talked about our vision and mission, both for our churches and our lives. I am certain that the Almighty has a vision for our ministry together for the coming years. I want to know what it is; I hope that you do to. Perhaps the Lord already gave it to you, and if this is the case, please share it with us.

Would you not agree with me that there is no greater place than the one at the very center of God's will, that there is no greater joy than knowing it, and that there is no greater excitement than living God's vision for us?

The vision is "a clear mental picture of a preferable future imparted by God…. (These are the word of George Barna). It is to bank from our past and present and to head forward to a future that reflects God's will. It does not mean a better future as if the church were doing something wrong, NO! It is a future that clearly expresses where our Loving God wants us to be for the next years, for the sake of those who are missing the most wonderful present of God in their lives, Jesus Christ.

We see on TV and hear in the news how many people are living with heavy emotional, spiritual and physical burdens. The Lord loves them passionately, that is the reason why Jesus came into this world in the first place, to deliver them and us from pain, suffering and sin. People need the Lord, and you and I have the answer to their needs.

Let us pray together to our Creator's vision for ministry. Remember that you and I play a very important part in it. We urgently need to know where God wants us to be within the next five years. Please, let's respond to Jesus' calling in our lives. People are restlessly waiting for you and me to respond.

May the Lord Jesus bless us all, as we begin the process of discernment for ministry for the next years.

Pastor Sonia L. Alvarado

ATTENTION EMANUEL AND ZION MEMBERS AND FRIENDS

NEW CHURCH DIRECTORY UNDERWAY

A church directory is an important tool for the pastor of a church as well as its congregation. It gives the pastor a chance to learn everyone's name, it allows new members of the church to learn the names of those who have been members for awhile as well as allowing established members to learn the names of newer members. Each of us always feels more like a member of a family when everyone knows our name. A church directory is also a selling tool for our church. The activity pages are useful in attracting new members because these pages tell people who we are and what we are all about. It is important that everyone participate in the church directory.

Emanuel's pictures are scheduled to be taken May 2 and 3 from 3:00 PM until 9:30 PM at Emanuel and from 12:00 Noon until 6:00 P.M. on May 24. Zion's pictures are scheduled to be taken on May 23 from 3:00 PM to 9:30 PM. However, if it is more convenient for some Zion members to come on either May 2 or 3 or 24or it is more convenient for Emanuel members to come on May 23, you can do so. Please contact Jackie Ackerman (793-1594) or Pat Shedal (755-4118)to schedule a time or see her at the back of church and sign up there for a time to have your family picture taken. As the time draws closer you will be sent a reminder so that you don't miss your appointment.

Everyone who has their picture taken will get a directory free. Everyone else will have to pay a nominal fee to get a copy so have your picture taken. It does not cost you anything to have you picture taken for the directory. If you choose to, you may order pictures from the company at their listed costs.

God willing we will have 100% participation this year. Thank you in advance for your interest and help.

Dear members at Emanuel and Zion,

THANK YOU!!

On behalf of the clients and board of directors of Two Rivers/Mishicot Ecumenical Pantry, I would like to thank you for your wonderful collection of cereal for the pantry. What food is donated does not have to be purchased allowing us to use our donated dollars to purchase other items that are in low reserve and to also put those dollars toward utilities and maintenance needs. I know that you are only too aware of the increasing needs in our area as families struggle with unemployment and uncertain futures and ultimately food insecurity. It will be because of churches like yours that we will be able to continue meeting the needs of our clients now and into the future.

We are extremely grateful for your gifts and look forward to your future support as together we minister to the less fortunate amongst us. God's blessings.

Sincerely,

Lois Masarik

TREP Coordinator

MINISTRIES

ARE YOU AN EFFECTIVE PRAYER?

What is your prayer life like? Prayer is the way we communicate with God. How effective a communicator are you? Do you pray daily or only in church when Pastor Sonia is leading the prayer? Have you ever done a "prayer fast" for someone who was seriously ill?

UMW will be sponsoring a Spiritual Growth Study on Prayer during June 2005 that will help you answer these questions. It will take you through different types of prayer and will point out role models who have become known for their skills in spiritual guidance.

We will explore The Lord's Prayer as a model for prayer. This prayer emerged from the formal and informal prayers of the Jewish people. His disciples asked Jesus how to pray and He taught them what we call The Lord's Prayer. He told his followers not to pray in public but to go into a closet to pray, yet he lifted up the persistent widow who cried out for justice from an unjust judge as a model for how to pray to God. He prayed alone many times, and in the end, his disciples slept through his most arduous prayers before his betrayal.

Christianity has been shaped by cultures and has shaped them. We will look at prayer variations that will help us look more deeply into our own spiritual practices. The study guide we will be using is called "Concerning Prayer" written by Mary Kathryn Pearce. The cost of the book is $5.50 including shipping and handling.

This study will be held on four Wednesday evenings from 5:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. in June 2005 at Emanuel United Methodist Church. If you are interested in joining this study group please contact Jackie Ackerman (793-1594) or the church office (793-1717) to sign up.

THIS STUDY IS OPEN TO ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED NOT JUST EMANUEL MEMBERS SO CONSIDER JOINING US.

MEET OUR MEMBER

ELAINE BELONGER

Elaine Keip was born on a farm in Faribault, Mn. However, she was not destined to be a farm girl. When she was 6 months old the family moved to Two Rivers.

In her early teens, Elaine met a girl named Kathryn Koeser (Do you remember her?) who invited her to join the Youth Group at this church. Elaine said, "I came, I liked it! And I joined the church when I was 18. As a Girl Scout Leader she assisted Margaret Miller with the Troop. For many years to the present day Elaine has been leading Bible Study groups on Wednesdays and Sundays, and still does. She has also served on numerous church committees over the years.

She attended the former Washington High School in Two Rivers where she met Ivan Belonger. They were married in 1941.

The couple lived above the upholstery shop known as Belonger & Son. Elaine assisted Ivan doing upholstery work. She also started a little store in the same location. It was called Candyland and supplied school kids with fresh sweet rolls and candy on their way to school.

And, there were about to get even busier! Elaine blessed Ivan with 6 boys and 2 girls..and life was always exciting! The children grew up, left the nest, and now they live all over the planet. And, Mother Elaine visits them whenever they send her an airline ticket.

Now, as a widow, Elaine lives just outside the northern city limits of Two Rivers. Her log cabin overlooks a forest where she enjoys plenty of visitors...squirrels, rabbits, opossum, songbirds, even wild turkeys that tap on her patio windows! They are Elaine's best friends. She loves them all..in addition to her church, her human friends, and of course, God, who is always close to her heart.

I think you will agree that..Elaine Belonger is a very special lady!

There, I said it and I'm glad!

Jack Skidmore

Emanuel UMW to offer "PRAYER" Mission Study in June

PRAYER CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE IF YOU WILL LET IT!!!

Do you know the power of prayer? Do you use it effectively in your own lives and the lives of your loved ones? What makes a prayer powerful and effective? Why do we pray in the first place? If you have ever asked yourself these questions or any others regarding prayer, you may find some of the answers at our mission study of Prayer this June.

We will be using the book "Concerning Prayer" by Mary Kathryn Pearce. This is a Bible based and United Methodist-sponsored program. If you are interested in this Mission Study, please call Jackie Ackerman at 793-1594 to sign up or call the church office. This will be a 4-week session meeting Wednesdays from 5:30-7:00 on June 1, 8, 22, 29. You must sign up by May 12, 2005 so that we can have the books here on time.

Thank you for your interest and support of Emanuel United Methodist Women and their efforts to bring mission study opportunities to Emanuel and Zion Churches.

WINDOW WORSHIP

HAND OF GOD

Scripture: Isaiah 49:16a "Behold I have engraved thee upon the palms of My hands..."

The hand of God can represent blessing or punishment. It gives strength to the faithful and shows tenderness. This writing is going to focus on the tenderness.

God measures out the waters with the hollow of His hand (Isaiah 40:12). God does not have a physical hand because He is a Spirit. To me, picturing the size of His hand in such a way suggests the amount of love that He has to give to each individual of th earth. When Jesus, God incarnate, fed the 4,000, He did so because He had compassion on all of them at tone time. This enormous capacity of His love goes beyond my understanding.

The second half of verse 16 says, "...thy walls are always before Me." Isaiah wrote this when the walls of Jerusalem lay in ruins. Even though Israel forsook God, He desired their restoration. He longs for people to become whole. God was a husband (Jeremiah 31: 2, 32) to Israel, yet Israel broke their vow that they made to God by loving other gods, serving them, putting their trust in them. The result was a fallen Jerusalem as those gods were useless against the enemy. God's love is everlasting, and with His loving kindness He drew them (and draws us) to Himself. God delights (Psalm 18:19) in us. Therefore, He is our hiding place (Psalm 119:114) and he fulfills our desires (Psalm 145:19). Perhaps we should say to God, with the psalmist (Psalm 63:8) "Dear God,/ My soul follows hard after Thee. / Thy right hand upholds me./" Yours truly, Me.

Hymn: "How Firm A Foundation" (verse 2). UMH # 529

REVEREND WILLIAM C. F. HAYES 1943 - 1947 Note: Not having been here in that era, I contacted some more "senior" members for information. Shirley Wilsmann provided such an interesting and informative account that I decided to pass it on to the congregation as written. Thank you, Shirley. The Reverend William C. F. Hayes and his wife, Lena, along with one son, Franklin (Buddy) occupied the parsonage at the corner of 13th and Madison Streets. Reverend Hayes followed Reverend Franklin Schlueter as Emanuel's pastor. The church was called Emanuel Evangelical Church at that time as this was prior to the merger with United Brethren Church. On the first Sunday that Reverend Hayes was in our pulpit, he said that occupying the parsonage hadn't changed much in the transition from Reverend Schlueter to Reverend Hayes. Both pastors had a wife, Lena, both had a Franklin, and as far as "Bills", there are always bills at the parsonage. Reverend Hayes was a deeply prophetic and religious man. His sermons, though sometimes beyond the realm of our understanding, could often be called service orations. The wife of Reverend Hayes, Lena, was a dramatic artist and performed many readings for the congregation. One memorable presentation that she repeated each Good Friday was entitled "The Wife of Pontius Pilate". She did it with so much feeling and so dramatically that most listeners were moved to tears. Lena Hayes was also a soprano soloist and sang in the choir. After serving four years Emanuel's pastor, Reverend Hayes was made District Superintendent and spent the last years of formal ministry in the Madison area. Reverend Hayes and his wife returned to Two Rivers in 1952 to take part in the note burning celebration service marking the end of the original debt of Emanuel Church. The theme of this event was called "Victory". Fulfilling the payment of the debt was a tremendous victory. The final marriage that Reverend Hayes performed at Emanuel Church was on September 18, 1946, joining Marion Dose and Paul Stegeman in matrimony. Just think! That was 58 years ago. After his retirement and after the death of his wife, Lena, Reverend Hayes spent his remaining years at Evergreen Manor, a retirement home in Fond du Lac. Dale Lium

THE WISCONSIN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CONFERENCE ORDAINS THE FIRST HISPANIC FEMALE PASTOR

That announcement was a historical moment for Pastor Sonia Alvarado, and for other Hispanic women in ministry.

Born in Guatamala, she moved to the United States in 1979 at the age of 16. She graduated from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary with a Masters in Divinity in 2001. Her husband, Julio Alvarado, is also an ordained Methodist Minister now serving America Latina – a Hispanic Congregation in Green Bay. The couple have 2 children.

Please Note: If you are making decisions now regarding your future career be sure to read the process of becoming an Ordained Minister. The 6 steps are outlined here in brief. For more information call (920-793-1717) and ask for Pastor Sonia Alvarado.

In order that the United Methodist Church may be assured that those persons who present themselves as candidates for ministry, are truly called of GOD to this office. Some steps need to be completed. Each candidate needs to go through a process prescribed by the Division of Ordained Ministry and the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry.

THOSE STEPS INCLUDE:

1. Become an "Inquiring Candidate": Upon hearing a call to ministry the candidate should read the vocational guide "THE CHRISTIAN AS MINISTER". This book should be discussed in consultation with the candidates's own Pastor, or another United Methodist Minister.

2. The Exploring Candidate. Those seeking to explore being a candidate for ordained ministry shall apply in writing, to the District Superintendent for admission to studies. You are now an Exploring candidate to be assigned to a supervising Pastor.

3. Declared Candidate. After completing steps 1 and 2 the candidate prepares a written request of reasons why he/she wants to be an ordained minister. It will be submitted to your local church Pastor and his committee on Pastor-Parish Relations.

4. After your local church has given you a favorable recommendation you become a certified candidate. But, now its time to appear before the District Committee for their examination. At this time you must complete the first Psychological and aptitude tests. Assuming you pass, you now need to be enrolled as a student in a school, college, university, or a school of Theology.

5. A candidate for probationary membership must have been graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in liberal education, or an equivalent degree in a college or university listed by the University Senate. After you complete your Masters in Divinity (M. Div) you become a probationary minister to be assigned to a local church setting, for at least 3 years in a full time appointment.

6. Now...you are ready for the final step in the process of ordination! The Ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church has full authority for the ministry. WORD..(preaching and teaching), THE SACRAMENTS (Communion and Baptism), ORDER (administration) and SERVICE (missions). As an ordained elder you become a member in full connection within the life of the annual conference. The whole process takes between 8-10 years.

Pastor Alvarado proudly says "I was able to do it in 8 years...thanks be to GOD!"

Trustee's Report, April 2005

Here's what is going on in the Trustee world:

The 13th Street Door Fund is up to $3,231+.

The Trustees have picked Quality Building Restoration Company, Inc to do the exterior brickwork. The Trustees have picked Van Der Hoff Studios to do the storm window replacement and the sanctuary cleaning and repainting. The Trustees have developed a work plan to accomplish these tasks. The recommendations and work plan have been forwarded to the Finance Committee for its action. We are still reviewing the bids for the 13th Street door and hope to pick a contractor soon.

Don Hallwachs filed down the edges of the front door (again) to loosen the front door. The raw wood was re-stained. When the weather is warmer, the edges will be treated with spar varnish.

The Schaus Company came and repaired the roof tiles and the cap tiles. The bill was approximately $941.00. Thanks to the members who responded to provide the emergency funds to pay for this work.

Two splash plates have been purchased and installed under the downspouts on 13th Street.

The Trustees wish to express our deepest sympathy to Gwen Buehler on the loss of her husband Ken. He was a good and faithful servant of the church and the Trustees.

Note: We need the cooperation of everyone in the congregation to make sure that we use church resources sparingly and wisely AND that we close windows, close doors, turn off appliances, turn off lights and lock doors when we are done. "A penny saved is a penny earned."
