What Do You Mean By
"Contemporary Worship"
There are many definitions for contemporary worship but this is what a contemporary worship service looks like in my mind:
1. Service would open with a band of some sort providing gathering music. I hope this will ultimately involve keyboard, drums, guitars, strings, and brass.
2. The gathered community of faith will be greeted and then we’ll sing for 10 to 15 minutes. The band and a music team will lead this. We will use Power Point to project lyrics for singing.
3. We will have sharing of concerns and joys/ prayer time/ and receive the offering.
4. There may be a drama or video to introduce the theme of the message of the day.
5. The message (same as what we now call sermon) will be offered incrementally, with breaks where we will use drama, music, and video to illustrate a point made or introduce the next idea) The sermon will also be more interactive. This is where the service will differ the most. The sermon will not begin and then end; it will weave biblical text, music, interaction and insights from day to day life, drama and video.
6. The message time will end with some sort of musical offering and sending forth.
7. This venue is slated to fit a 45 minute time slot.
This service will be evolving as we go along. What we begin with may look quite different 2 years down the road. I’m sure we will learn a lot along the way.
In order to create this venue, we will need to build several teams. Music teams will be integral to the effectiveness of the service. Here we will need someone to coordinate the music, rehearse the teams and band, and be a part of the musical production in the service.
Pastor Kris and I will work closely with a team we are calling a "Creative Think Tank" for lack of better terms. This team will be made up of a variety of persons who are interested in this venue. This will be the Contemporary Worship Team that will sit with us and plan themes, and everything in the area of music, drama, and video that will be a part of a particular service. This team will meet weekly and work on 2 to 4 services each time, with the primary focus on the upcoming week.
I want to say again that this service is not meant to be for those who prefer Traditional Worship. If this venue enables you to connect with others and God in the community of faith, wonderful! This service will enable us to reach another audience, some who are on our rolls and others who have never darkened our doors. It is the hope of your pastoral staff that this service will enable us to reach even more with the message of God’s love and the Good News of Jesus Christ. That is our ultimate goal! – Pastor Doyle
