The Byron Bugle . . .

Spring 2008

Although there’s still a good layer of snow on the ground and flurries in the air, I can feel the growing intensity of spring.  It’s always a rush to prepare the swimming pool for another season, get lawn and garden equipment up and running, and do a bit of spring cleaning before the summer season.  This year, like most, it seems we have almost too many tasks to handle.

One exciting project is complete refurbishment of two of the Ingraham Hall guestrooms and adjoining bath; a suite.  Local United Methodist congregations are funding and sending in volunteer crews to complete this work before the summer season gets underway.  What a wonderful gift!  This suite will be a model of what guest accommodations can look like in historic Ingraham Hall.  Life expectancy for this work is realistically 15 years; 15 years of hosting non-profit groups seeking to enhance their work and grow closer to God. Our guest groups can then contribute towards further refurbishment of additional suites.  Maybe your group would consider such a gift.

We’re also painting, reupholstering furniture, replacing light fixtures and wall hangings in the Ingraham Hall fireplace lounge.  So many good things happen in this room from worship services to social time to early morning personal reflection.  It looks a little different with every group. This will be a welcome improvement.

We’re also exploring the possibility of partnering with a local organic farmer to provide most of our summer vegetables.  It’s part of our increasing understanding that Byron Center has the opportunity to model many “green” practices.  You’ll notice new LED exit lights, CFB’s in the main dining room, experiments with our outdoor campus lighting and maybe solar heating for the swimming pool.  What else can we try to be better stewards of our precious earth?

We’re continuing efforts at partnering with other local non-profits and corporations to construct a premier Challenge Course at Byron Center. This would be available to Byron Center guest groups as well as community organizations.  We’re also just beginning to talk with folks about the same type of partnering arrangement for a Disc Golf course.  What other program enhancing additions would you like for us to explore?

As always, contact me or corner me at the coffee pot the next time you’re at Byron Center.  We need all of your ideas and support as we work together on development of this ministry and opportunity to do so much good.

God’s Peace,

Byron Pegram
